Sweden Secures Victory in Biathlon World Cup Staffette; Latvia Faces Early Exit

Kontiolahti, Finland – The seventh stage of the Biathlon World Cup concluded on Sunday with a dominant performance from the Swedish women’s team in the 4x6km staffette. Although Sweden celebrated a well-earned victory, the Latvian team experienced a disappointing day, being lapped before the final stage and ultimately failing to finish the race.

The Swedish quartet of Linn Gestblom, Hanna Öberg, Anna Magnusson and Elvira Öberg secured first place with a time of 1:09:33.2, demonstrating both strong skiing and accurate shooting. They used only four spare rounds throughout the competition, showcasing their consistency on the range.

France finished in second place, earning the Small Crystal Globe for the overall women’s staffette season title. Camille Bened, Océane Michon, Lou Jeanmonnot, and Julia Simon displayed excellent shooting skills, needing only three spare rounds. Despite a 40.6-second gap behind Sweden, their performance secured the season-long title. Norway claimed the third spot, trailing the leaders by one minute and 6.8 seconds, despite incurring one penalty lap and utilizing ten spare rounds.

The Latvian team started the race with the 17th bib number, a position reflecting their overall ranking in the Nations Cup. Maintaining this position at the finish of the season is crucial for Latvia to secure the opportunity to field a full team of four athletes in the following season.

From a Latvian perspective, the performance of the Canadian team, similarly ranked 18th in the Nations Cup, was of particular interest. Canada ultimately finished in 15th position.

Bendika initiated the staffette for Latvia, adopting a cautious approach and focusing on maintaining contact with the main group rather than challenging for the lead. The initial 19 teams entered the first shooting stage within a 17-second window, with Bendika positioned 15th.

Bendika’s First Shooting Stage

Bendika executed a flawless first shooting stage, moving into 9th place, 10.4 seconds behind the then-leader, France’s Camille Bened. Still, her second shooting stage proved more challenging. She initially closed three of the five targets, but struggled to correct the misses, even with the use of spare rounds. This resulted in a penalty lap for Latvia, dropping them to 16th place, nearly 12 seconds behind Canada.

Despite the setback, Bendika managed to reduce the gap to Nadja Moser by almost four seconds before handing over to Buliņa. Canada had overtaken Bulgaria during this segment, securing 15th position.

Buliņa’s Struggles on the Range

Buliņa faced a difficult task, unable to match the pace of Shilo Rousseau. Her shooting was less precise, requiring all three spare rounds to correct two missed targets. By the time she completed her leg, Latvia trailed by nearly 30 seconds, and Sabule began her segment in 17th place, more than a minute and ten seconds behind the leaders.

Sabule’s Unfinished Leg

Unfortunately, Sabule was unable to close the gap, despite a perfect prone shooting stage. As she approached her standing shooting stage, the threat of being lapped loomed. While she managed to hit most of the targets with only one spare round, she was unable to complete her leg, resulting in Latvia’s premature exit from the competition.

The Swedish team’s victory underscores their consistent performance throughout the season, while Latvia’s early exit highlights the challenges they face in competing at the highest level of biathlon. The World Cup continues, with the next event scheduled to take place in Otepää, Estonia, from March 12th to 15th.
