Latvia Fails to Qualify for 2027 Handball World Championship After Loss to Poland

Warsaw, Poland – The Latvian men’s handball team saw their hopes for a spot in the 2027 World Championship dashed on Sunday, falling to Poland 33-25 (18-15 at halftime) in the second leg of their qualification round. The two-game aggregate score of 66-49 secures Poland’s advancement to the final qualification stage in May, where they will face Austria.

Despite a strong showing from Valdis Kalniņš, who converted seven of twelve attempts, Latvia couldn’t overcome a determined Polish side on their home court. Leonards Valkovskis added six goals on ten shots, and Jevgeņijs Rogonovs was perfect, scoring on all four of his attempts. However, it wasn’t enough to counter Poland’s cohesive attack and strong defensive presence.

Mikolaj Czapliński led the Polish scoring with five goals. The first leg, played in Jelgava on Thursday, saw Latvia lose 33-24, setting the stage for a difficult task in Poland. The Latvian squad featured six players currently competing in clubs abroad, alongside eleven representing domestic teams like Dobeles “Tenax,” ASK/MSĢ, “Latgols,” and “Vaiņode.”

Latvia faced challenges heading into the matches with key players sidelined due to injury. Dainis Krištopāns was unavailable, and captain Jānis Pāvels Valkovskis was also unable to participate, leading to Jevgeņijs Rogonovs being named captain for the games against Poland. The absence of these key figures undoubtedly impacted the team’s performance.

Further compounding the injury concerns, Endijs Kušners, who plays for Icelandic second-division club “Hordur,” was ruled out due to an ankle injury sustained shortly before the start of the training camp. Emīls Kurzemnieks and Ralfs Geislers were also absent due to family and personal reasons, respectively, further depleting the Latvian roster.

The road to the 2027 World Championship has been a challenging one for Latvia. In the first qualifying round, they secured two away victories against Luxembourg (28-20 and 34-33). Prior to that, in European Championship pre-qualification, Latvia defeated Great Britain in two matches (35-27 and 40-25). These earlier successes built momentum, but ultimately weren’t enough to overcome a strong Polish team.

The 2027 World Men’s Handball Championship will be held in Germany in January, featuring 32 national teams, including 14 from Europe. Germany, as the host nation, and Denmark, the current world champion, have already automatically qualified for the tournament.

This defeat marks the finish of Latvia’s qualification journey for the 2027 championship. While the team demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the qualifying stages, Poland proved to be a formidable opponent. The Latvian Handball Federation will now focus on developing the team for future competitions and building on the experience gained during this campaign.

The Polish team’s strong defensive play was a key factor in their victory. As Latvian team head coach Margots Valkovskis noted in pre-match analysis, breaking through the Polish defense, anchored by a high-caliber goalkeeper, would be a significant challenge. This proved to be the case, as Latvia struggled to consistently uncover scoring opportunities.

Despite the loss, the Latvian handball program continues to develop. The inclusion of players from foreign clubs demonstrates a growing level of professionalism and ambition within the sport in Latvia. The experience gained by these players, combined with the talent emerging from domestic leagues, provides a foundation for future success.

Looking ahead, the Latvian Handball Federation will likely focus on strengthening its youth development programs and providing more opportunities for players to compete at the international level. The goal will be to build a sustainable pipeline of talent that can consistently challenge for qualification to major tournaments.

The next steps for the Latvian national team will involve evaluating the performance in the qualifying campaign and identifying areas for improvement. This will include analyzing tactical approaches, player development, and overall team cohesion. The federation will also work to secure funding and resources to support the team’s preparations for future competitions.

While the dream of competing in the 2027 World Championship is over, the Latvian handball team can grab pride in their efforts and appear forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The team’s dedication and perseverance will be crucial as they strive to elevate Latvian handball on the international stage.

What’s next for Latvia’s handball program remains to be seen, but the focus will undoubtedly shift towards building for the future and preparing for the next qualification cycle. The Latvian Handball Federation is expected to announce details of upcoming training camps and friendly matches in the coming weeks.
