Otepää, Estonia – Sweden dominated the mixed relay at the Biathlon World Cup in Otepää on Sunday, while Latvia’s team faced a challenging day marked by significant struggles in the shooting range. The Latvian quartet finished 20th, hampered by a high number of penalty loops and missed shots, as Sweden secured the gold medal.
The Swedish team, comprised of Viktor Brandt, Martin Ponsiluoma, Anna Karolina Heijdenberg, and Elvira Öberg, completed the course in 1 hour, 16 minutes, and 32 seconds. They utilized 14 reserve cartridges and incurred one penalty loop, demonstrating a strong combination of speed and accuracy. Switzerland finished second, 28.6 seconds behind Sweden, and the United States rounded out the podium in third.
Latvia’s team – Andrejs Rastorgujevs, Renārs Birkentāls, Estere Volfa, and Baiba Bendika – finished well behind the leaders, accumulating six penalty loops and using 17 reserve cartridges. The performance underscored difficulties in maintaining shooting precision throughout the race.
Rastorgujevs led off for Latvia, impressively clearing all targets in the prone shooting stage without needing extra cartridges. However, his standing shooting proved more challenging, resulting in a penalty loop and dropping him to 17th position as he exited the shooting range. Birkentāls followed, initially showing promise with a clean prone stage, but then incurring three penalty loops in the standing stage, causing a significant drop in the team’s position.
Bendika continued to struggle with accuracy, earning a penalty loop in both the prone and standing stages. Volfa managed a clean prone stage but used three reserve cartridges in the standing stage before finishing the race in 20th place.
The stark contrast in shooting performance highlighted the difference between the two teams. While Sweden demonstrated composure and precision, Latvia battled inconsistencies that ultimately cost them valuable time and position. The six penalty loops accumulated by the Latvian team translated to a significant time deficit of five minutes and 31.7 seconds behind the victorious Swedish squad.
This result comes after a mixed-pair relay event earlier in the week where Latvia also faced challenges with shooting accuracy, being lapped by the leaders. The team’s struggles in Otepää underscore the need for improvement in shooting consistency as the biathlon season progresses.
The Swedish victory marks a continued strong performance for the nation in biathlon, solidifying their position as a leading force in the sport. For Latvia, the focus will now shift to analyzing the race, identifying areas for improvement, and preparing for upcoming competitions. The team will need to address the shooting inconsistencies to be competitive in future events.
The Biathlon World Cup continues with further events in Otepää, offering opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills and compete for valuable points. Fans can follow the ongoing action and results on the official IBU Biathlon website.
