EAGAN, Minnesota – Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray agreed to terms with the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday, the team announced. The move injects immediate intrigue into the Vikings’ quarterback room, headlined by 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy.
The agreement is for one year, according to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Minnesota will pay $1.3 million of the $36.8 million Murray was already guaranteed through his contract with the Cardinals, who released him on March 3. Although the move wasn’t officially finalized until Wednesday, the Vikings had reportedly prioritized Murray as competition for McCarthy for weeks.
The Vikings also showed interest in veteran quarterback Geno Smith, but the Las Vegas Raiders traded him to the New York Jets before Minnesota had a chance to pursue him.
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has consistently emphasized the importance of quarterback depth throughout the offseason, speaking extensively about both McCarthy and the overall position group. While O’Connell has stopped short of naming a definitive starter for 2026, interim General Manager Rob Brzezinski – stepping into the role following the dismissal of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah – made it clear the team would explore all options in their pursuit of improved quarterback play.
McCarthy has started just 10 games across two seasons since being selected 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. He’s battled through four separate injuries in his young professional career, including a right meniscus tear that sidelined him for the entirety of the 2024 season. His QBR of 35.6 last season ranked 24th among the 26 NFL quarterbacks who made at least 10 starts.
The Vikings allowed Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones to depart in free agency, leaving McCarthy as the presumptive starter with limited backup options. The team clearly aimed to avoid repeating that scenario this season.
Murray, 28, will push McCarthy to rapidly improve or potentially supplant him as the Vikings’ Week 1 starter. The signing represents a significant investment in a player with proven NFL experience, despite recent injury concerns.
Murray’s seven seasons in Arizona were marked by flashes of brilliance, but ultimately resulted in only one playoff appearance: a Wild Card round loss to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021.
A two-time Pro Bowler, Murray is one of only five players in NFL history – joining Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Russell Wilson and Cam Newton – to throw for over 20,000 yards and rush for over 3,000 yards within their first seven seasons. He completed 1,974 of 2,941 passes for 20,460 yards with 121 touchdowns and 60 interceptions during his time with the Cardinals. His career passer rating is 92.2, and his career completion percentage of 67.1 is a Cardinals franchise record among players with at least 232 attempts, ranking fifth all-time in NFL history.
The Cardinals selected Murray with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He started all 87 regular-season games he played for Arizona, posting a 38-48-1 record. While capable of explosive plays, Murray’s time with the Cardinals was also punctuated by inconsistency and, most recently, injury. Arizona became the first team since the 1970 merger to lose three consecutive games on walk-off field goals during the 2025 season, a period where Murray’s availability was limited to just five games due to injury. In those five games, he completed 110 of 161 passes for 962 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions.
The addition of Murray provides the Vikings with a veteran presence and a dynamic skillset that could complement O’Connell’s offensive scheme. The coaching staff will now face the task of integrating Murray into the offense and determining how best to utilize his strengths alongside McCarthy’s developing abilities. The competition at quarterback is expected to be fierce throughout training camp and the preseason.
The Vikings’ decision to pursue Murray underscores their commitment to winning now. Despite the team’s recent struggles, ownership and the front office are clearly determined to field a competitive team in 2026, and beyond. The quarterback position is paramount to that goal, and the addition of a proven talent like Murray significantly improves the team’s chances of success.
Minnesota’s next key date is the start of the NFL Draft in April, where they will look to add further talent to their roster. The team will also be closely monitoring the progress of McCarthy and Murray throughout the offseason program, with the expectation that both quarterbacks will be prepared to contribute significantly to the team’s success in 2026.
The Vikings will open the 2026 season at home against an opponent yet to be determined. The team’s schedule will be released in May, providing fans with a clearer picture of the challenges that lie ahead.
