Koeman: PSV’s Guus Til on Netherlands’ World Cup List | Oranje Squad Update

PSV Eindhoven midfielder Guus Til is firmly in contention for a spot in the Netherlands’ squad for this summer’s FIFA World Cup, according to national team manager Ronald Koeman. The coach revealed Til’s position during an appearance on the Dutch program Goedemorgen Eredivisie, highlighting the player’s potential role as a number 10 in the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Koeman detailed the selection process, explaining that the team operates with both an “A-list and a shadow list.” “Guus is on one of those lists as a number 10,” Koeman stated. He further emphasized that even with a 26-player roster, playing time won’t be guaranteed for everyone. “We are going to the World Cup with 26 players, but not all 26 will play. So you also look at what the best group is. And then players like Guus Til are definitely in the picture.”

The confirmation comes as Til recovers from a recent injury sustained while playing for PSV. Despite the setback, Koeman clearly values the midfielder’s attributes, specifically mentioning his strong mentality. This emphasis on character reflects a lesson learned from the UEFA European Championship in 2024, Koeman explained. “That was my first tournament as a coach. I experienced them as a player, but then you are totally different in the match.”

Koeman elaborated on the challenges of managing a squad throughout a major tournament. “Before the European Championship, we played two practice matches, and then you can still give everyone minutes. But at a certain point, you are together for a longer period. After a week or two, three at a tournament, players also witness that they are not playing or coming on as a substitute.”

He continued, “Then a player can also lose some energy. If you have a character that can’t handle that, it can cost your group. And you try to prevent that, still tricky it is. Because disappointment is logical, that happens to players.” Koeman stressed the importance of maintaining a high level of effort and competition within the squad, even from those not regularly in the starting lineup. “But you have to keep pushing every day. And craft it as difficult as possible for the others every day. And some players cope with that easier and better than others. That’s just how it is.”

Til has been a key contributor for PSV this season, particularly in the first half of the campaign. Filling in for the absent Ricardo Pepi, he scored 12 goals in 22 appearances. His versatility, capable of playing as both a midfielder and a forward, adds to his appeal for Koeman’s squad. However, his last appearance for the national team dates back to October 2024, with six international caps to his name.

PSV’s recent 2-1 victory over AZ Alkmaar on Saturday provided a positive result for the club, but the focus for Til remains on regaining full fitness and proving his worth to Koeman ahead of the final squad announcement. The coach’s comments suggest that Til’s mental fortitude, alongside his technical ability, will be crucial factors in his chances of securing a place on the plane.

The upcoming weeks will be critical for Til as he aims to demonstrate his readiness for the demands of the World Cup. Koeman’s willingness to consider players who can handle the pressures of tournament football suggests that Til’s character may be just as vital as his on-field performance. For Dutch fans, the prospect of seeing Til contribute to the national team on the world stage is an exciting one.

The Netherlands will be looking to make a strong showing at the World Cup, and Koeman’s squad selection will be under intense scrutiny. With a blend of experienced players and emerging talents, the Dutch team aims to compete with the best in the world. Guus Til’s inclusion would add another dimension to the squad, providing Koeman with a versatile option in midfield and attack.

Next Up for PSV: PSV Eindhoven will face SC Telstar on March 22, 2026, in a KNVB Beker match. This match will provide another opportunity for Til to showcase his form and fitness as he continues his recovery.
