DENVER – The New York Knicks delivered a resounding statement Friday night, overpowering the Denver Nuggets 142-103 at Ball Arena to kick off their West Coast road trip. The victory marked the Nuggets’ worst home loss since a defeat to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls in 1998, according to reports.
OG Anunoby spearheaded the Knicks’ attack with a stellar 34-point performance, supported by 18 points from Josh Hart and a double-double from Karl-Anthony Towns, who contributed 17 points and 13 rebounds. The Knicks’ dominance was evident throughout the contest, as they controlled the game against a Nuggets team that has now lost three of its last five games.
Nikola Jokic, the reigning NBA MVP, led the Nuggets with 38 points, but his efforts weren’t enough to prevent the blowout. Jokic also grabbed eight rebounds, but struggled from beyond the arc, missing his first six three-point attempts. The Nuggets’ shooting woes were a significant factor in the loss, shooting just 45% from the field and a dismal 20% from three-point range, including a stretch where they missed 17 consecutive triples, as noted in reports.
Anunoby’s Ascent in Denver
This wasn’t Anunoby’s first impressive showing in Denver. Last season, he posted a career-high 40 points at Ball Arena. On Friday, he continued to thrive at altitude, showcasing an efficient shooting performance (11-for-17) and adding four steals. His defensive impact was particularly notable, as he effectively guarded Jokic and disrupted the Nuggets’ offense.
“Defensively, he’s on another level, man,” Knicks coach Mike Brown said. “If he keeps that up, that’s Defensive Player of the Year type stuff. For sure First Team All-Defense. He’s guarding point guards. He’s guarding the multi-time MVP Nikola Jokic. Then he’s guarding everybody in between.”
Anunoby’s highlight reel included a spectacular breakaway double-pump reverse jam at the end of the third quarter, effectively sealing the game and sending the Nuggets faithful heading for the exits. The arena was soon filled with chants from the traveling Knicks fans.
Brunson’s Assists Offset Shooting Struggles
While Anunoby carried the offensive load, Jalen Brunson, despite shooting just 3-for-13 from the field for nine points, contributed significantly with 15 assists, marking his third consecutive game with double-digit dimes. Hart, battling a sore back, added 18 points in 25 minutes of play. Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson also provided strong performances, alternating at center and contributing 17 points and 13 rebounds, and 13 points and five rebounds respectively.
The Knicks’ victory improves their record to 41-23, positioning them third in the Eastern Conference, trailing only the Boston Celtics (42-21) and the Detroit Pistons (45-16). The Nuggets, meanwhile, will look to rebound from this defeat as they continue their playoff push.
Heat Snap Hornets’ Winning Streak
In other NBA action Friday, the Miami Heat ended the Charlotte Hornets’ impressive eight-game winning streak with a 128-120 victory. Tyler Herro led the Heat with 33 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, including eight three-pointers. A 30-19 fourth-quarter run proved crucial for Miami. Bam Adebayo added a double-double with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Jaime Jáquez contributed 21 points.
Other Notable Results
Elsewhere, Alperen Sengun powered the Houston Rockets to a 106-99 win over the Portland Trail Blazers with 28 points. The Phoenix Suns also secured a narrow 118-116 victory against the New Orleans Pelicans.
For the Knicks, this dominant performance in Denver serves as a significant confidence boost as they continue their challenging West Coast schedule. The team’s balanced attack and defensive intensity were on full display, signaling their potential to develop a deep playoff run.
The Nuggets, despite Jokic’s strong individual performance, will need to address their shooting struggles and defensive lapses if they hope to regain their form and contend for another championship.
Next Up: The Knicks continue their road trip, facing the Utah Jazz on Monday, March 9th. The Nuggets will look to bounce back when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday, March 9th.
