Karson Kuhlman Extends with Rögle BK: NHL Forward Stays in Sweden

Ängelholm, Sweden – Rögle BK appears set to retain the services of forward Karson Kuhlman for the 2026-27 season, according to reports from Expressen. The 30-year-old American forward, who joined Rögle last June, has reportedly agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) club. This news comes as Rögle battles through a tight SM-kvartsfinalen playoff series against Färjestad.

“He brings a lot of experience,” Rögle officials stated when Kuhlman initially signed a one-year deal from Finnish club Lukko. The forward’s future with the club had been uncertain following the initial contract, but Expressen reports that an agreement has been reached for another year in Sweden. Kuhlman himself expressed his contentment with life in Sweden, telling the publication, “I suppose it suits me very well.”

Kuhlman, who has played over 150 games in the National Hockey League, is currently focused on the ongoing playoff series. “I’m just focusing on the playoffs right now,” Kuhlman said to Expressen after Rögle’s 2-1 victory over Färjestad on Monday, a win that extended the best-of-seven series. “We have a large game again on Wednesday, so we need to recharge and move from there.”

Second Season in Europe for the Minnesota Native

Prior to joining Rögle, Karson Kuhlman spent the majority of his professional career within the Boston Bruins organization, moving between the American Hockey League (AHL) and the NHL. He as well had stints with the Seattle Kraken and Winnipeg Jets before playing exclusively in the AHL during the 2023-24 season. That experience prompted a move overseas.

Kuhlman’s hockey resume also includes representing the United States at the 2022 World Championship. He transitioned to European hockey after a productive season with Lukko in Finland’s Liiga, where he registered 46 points. This past season with Rögle, he recorded 25 points in 52 regular-season games, averaging 15:57 of ice time per game. He currently has one assist in the playoffs.

The Esko, Minnesota native has demonstrated a consistent ability to contribute offensively. His adaptability and experience are clearly valued by the Rögle organization, as they navigate a challenging playoff schedule. For fans unfamiliar with the SHL, the SM-kvartsfinalen represents the first round of the Swedish playoffs, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals.

Rögle’s continued playoff run will be a key focus for Kuhlman as he settles into his future with the club. The team will need his experience and offensive contributions as they attempt to advance through the SHL playoffs. The next game against Färjestad on Wednesday will be crucial in determining the series outcome.
