Lillehammer, Norway – Latvian cross-country skier Lauris Kaparkalējs recorded his best-ever result at a U-23 World Championship event on Thursday, finishing 34th in the 20-kilometer freestyle race with a mass start. The performance at the U-23 World Championships in Norway marks a significant step forward for the young athlete, placing him among the top competitors in his age group.
Kaparkalējs, 22, navigated the challenging 20-kilometer course efficiently, staying within the leading pack for the first five kilometers. As the race progressed and the field began to separate around the 6km mark, Kaparkalējs maintained a strong position within the second group, ranging from 30th to 43rd place. He demonstrated resilience, increasing his pace around the 12.6km point to climb from 43rd to the 40th position, ultimately finishing with a time just over two minutes and 16 seconds behind the winner.
The result earned Kaparkalējs 107 FIS points, a testament to his growing competitive level. His performance also secured him the distinction of being the highest-finishing athlete from the Baltic states in the event. This achievement follows a strong showing earlier in the week, where Kaparkalējs reached the semi-finals of the sprint competition – a first for a Latvian skier at the U-23 level.

The race was won by Germany’s Elias Keck, who completed the course in 43 minutes, and 32.5 seconds. Savely Korostelyov of Russia finished a mere 0.3 seconds behind Keck, securing second place, while Xavier McKeever of Canada rounded out the podium in third, 0.6 seconds off the winning pace. The top three finishers were separated by less than a second, demonstrating the highly competitive nature of the event.
Kaparkalējs’ performance builds on a promising career trajectory. He first competed at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne in 2020, achieving a 47th-place finish in the sprint event. He has since participated in multiple World Championships, both at the junior and U-23 levels, steadily improving his results. He made his debut in the World Cup in Ruka, Finland, in November 2022.
