Mexico City – The Kane County Cougars of the American Association have claimed the 2026 Baseball Champions League (BCL) Americas title, defeating the host team, Diablos Rojos del México, by a score of 7-3 on Sunday, March 29th, at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú. The victory marks a significant upset, dethroning the defending champions in front of 4,994 fans.
The Cougars, representing the United States, completed a perfect run through the tournament, finishing with a 5-0 record. This championship win follows a dominant performance throughout the round-robin stage, where they averaged 12 runs per game. The Diablos Rojos, aiming for back-to-back titles, had previously won the championship in 2025.
Early Lead, Decisive Sixth Inning Propel Cougars to Victory
Kane County struck first in the top of the first inning with a solo home run from former Major Leaguer Dillon Thomas. The game remained a pitcher’s duel for several innings, with both teams struggling to break through. Bryan González of the Diablos Rojos leveled the score in the fifth inning, as well with a home run.
However, the Cougars exploded offensively in the sixth inning, scoring six runs to take a commanding lead. Armando Upshaw, Josh Rehwaldt, Todd Lott, and Thomas Dillon all contributed RBIs, while Claudio Finol added a two-run home run. A bad pickoff throw also resulted in a run for Kane County, extending their advantage to 7-1.
The Diablos Rojos attempted a late rally, scoring two runs in the seventh and eighth innings on doubles from José Marmelejos and Rio Ruiz, but the Cougars’ lead proved insurmountable.
Cougars’ Perfect Tournament Run
The Cougars’ path to the championship wasn’t just about the final game. They began the tournament with a 14-7 victory over the Diablos Rojos on March 24th, setting the tone for their dominant performance. They continued their winning streak with a 16-10 win against CTBC Brothers of Taiwan, a 9-0 shutout of Cocodrilos de Matanzas from Cuba, and a 9-7 victory over Dantos de Managua from Nicaragua. Their undefeated record earned them the top seed in the tournament.
The Diablos Rojos, despite the final loss, demonstrated resilience throughout the tournament. After an initial defeat to Kane County, they secured wins against Dantos de Managua (10-6), CTBC Brothers (12-4), and a surprising 36-13 victory over Cocodrilos de Matanzas, earning them a spot in the championship game.
BCL Americas Evolution and Future Plans
The 2026 Baseball Champions League was originally scheduled to include six teams, but the withdrawal of Venezuela following their victory in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) altered the tournament format. Instead of a group stage followed by semifinals, all teams competed in a round-robin format, with the top teams advancing to the championship game.
Josh Allen of the Kane County Cougars was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2026 BCL Americas, succeeding Robinson Canó, who earned the honor in 2025 while playing for the Diablos Rojos.
The BCL Americas has evolved since its pilot edition in 2023, held in Mérida, Yucatán, where the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks also represented the United States in a championship victory over Caimanes de Barranquilla of Colombia. While the 2023 edition featured only four teams, the World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC) recognizes the 2025 tournament in Mexico City as the first official edition.
Looking Ahead: Expansion of the Baseball Champions League
Mexico’s contract as the host nation for the BCL Americas concluded with the 2026 tournament. Organizers will now begin a process to select a novel host country for 2027, with the goal of establishing the tournament as an annual event with at least six participating teams.
The BCL model is expanding globally. The inaugural BCL Europa is scheduled to take place between May and September of this year, and plans are underway to launch a BCL Asia between 2027 and 2028, further solidifying the league’s international presence.
The Cougars’ victory marks a new chapter in the Baseball Champions League, signaling the growing competitiveness of baseball across the Americas, and beyond. The league’s continued expansion promises to bring even more exciting international competition to fans worldwide.
