Kalle Rovanpera Withdraws from Super Formula Due to Health Issues | Go4speed

SUZUKA, Japan – Rallying superstar Kalle Rovanperä has announced he is stepping back from his planned debut season in Japan’s Super Formula Championship due to ongoing health issues, bringing a halt to a bold career transition. The two-time World Rally Champion revealed the demanding decision on Saturday, expressing his disappointment but prioritizing his well-being.

“I have difficult news to share,” Rovanperä posted on social media. “I will be stepping back from the upcoming races and my participation in this year’s Super Formula season. I’ve been working with medical issues for already a longer period, which have gotten worse this year. My health doesn’t allow me to continue safely at the moment. Now my first priority is to fix that.”

The 25-year-old Finn, backed by Toyota Gazoo Racing, embarked on an ambitious move to single-seater racing with the ultimate goal of reaching Formula 1. This plan involved a season in Super Formula with the KCMG team, a stepping stone towards potential opportunities in Formula 2. However, medical evaluations following pre-season testing at Suzuka prompted a mutual decision with Toyota to suspend the program for now.

Rovanperä’s journey into circuit racing began with participation in the Formula Regional Oceania Championship earlier this year, where he secured a podium finish at Teretonga Park. Despite showing promise, he was forced to withdraw from the final round at Highlands Motorsport Park due to illness. Prior to that, he experienced issues during the initial Super Formula test at Suzuka, later diagnosed as Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a condition causing episodes of dizziness.

The decision marks a significant setback for Rovanperä, who last year announced his intention to leave the World Rally Championship to pursue a career in single-seaters. He had garnered international attention as the son of former WRC driver Harri Rovanperä, and quickly established himself as a dominant force in rallying, winning back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2023. His transition to circuit racing was seen as a testament to his versatility and ambition.

Despite the current challenges, Rovanperä remains optimistic about his future in motorsport. “Feedback and progress this year shows that there’s good potential in this project. My chapter in circuit racing isn’t finished,” he stated. “I’m more than sorry for those who hoped to notice me on track. I’m looking forward to see you all soon as possible! I’m grateful to Morizo, TGR and my partners for their care and for standing by me, and I’ll keep working hard to come back stronger. Thank you for your understanding and your continued support.”

Toyota Gazoo Racing has yet to release a detailed statement regarding the future of the program, but has confirmed its support for Rovanperä’s recovery. The team emphasized the importance of the driver’s health and well-being, and expressed confidence in his potential to return to racing when he is fit to do so.

The Super Formula Championship is a highly competitive series considered a crucial stepping stone for drivers aspiring to reach Formula 1. The series features powerful, technologically advanced cars and attracts a mix of experienced racers and promising young talents. Rovanperä’s absence will undoubtedly be felt by the KCMG team and the championship as a whole.

For now, Rovanperä’s focus will be on addressing his health concerns and preparing for a potential return to racing in the future. While the timeline for his comeback remains uncertain, he has vowed to continue working towards his goal of competing at the highest level of motorsport. The motorsport world will be watching closely, hoping to see the Finnish driver back on track when he is ready.

What’s Next: Rovanperä will prioritize his health and recovery. Toyota Gazoo Racing is expected to provide updates on his progress in the coming months. The Super Formula Championship season will continue as scheduled, with the next race at Fuji Speedway on April 20th.
