A harrowing pursuit unfolded across the New York metropolitan area Thursday, culminating in the arrest of a New Jersey man accused of kidnapping his girlfriend at gunpoint in Jersey City. Justin González, 25, of Newark, New Jersey, led authorities on a high-speed chase through Brooklyn, resulting in multiple collisions and injuries, before being taken into custody near the Belt Parkway’s Knapp Avenue exit in Sheepshead Bay.
The incident began when the Jersey City Police Department (JCPD) responded to a call from an anonymous source reporting a woman in danger within a moving vehicle. According to authorities, police tracked González’s vehicle from Newark, through Irvington and Elizabeth, New Jersey, before notifying the New York Police Department (NYPD) as he crossed the Goethals Bridge into Staten Island around 3:11 p.m. On Thursday.
NYPD officers then picked up the pursuit on the eastbound Belt Parkway as González exited the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge heading into Brooklyn approximately 20 minutes later. The 31-year-old kidnapping victim was found inside the vehicle and had sustained minor injuries after allegedly being assaulted by González, police said. Five police officers were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries sustained during the chase.
González now faces a slew of charges in connection with both the kidnapping and the subsequent pursuit. He has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon, assault, reckless endangerment, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and unlawful fleeing a police officer, along with four moving violations, according to police reports. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has as well issued a warrant for his arrest related to the alleged crimes committed in Jersey City.
This incident is the latest in a troubling pattern of high-speed chases and violent encounters in the New York City area. In May, a similar pursuit in Yonkers, New York, led to the arrest of three individuals found in possession of loaded firearms and narcotics. More recently, in March 2025, a suspect fleeing police in a stolen vehicle in Manhattan struck and fatally injured a motorcyclist. And in November 2024, a driver fleeing a robbery in Queens struck and killed a cyclist.
Authorities continue to emphasize zero tolerance for reckless driving and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The dangers faced by both motorists and vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, remain a significant concern.
A Pattern of Domestic Violence
The case also highlights the pervasive issue of domestic violence, which affects an estimated 10 million people in the United States each year. Incidents of domestic violence are consistently reported in New York City and surrounding areas, impacting individuals across all demographics. On Thursday, just hours before González’s arrest, two sisters were shot by an ex-boyfriend in their Brooklyn home, with one remaining in critical condition. Last week, a 75-year-old man was accused of murdering his wife, whose remains were discovered in Queens after being missing since July 2025. Another incident saw a man fatally shoot his wife and her parents before taking his own life in New Jersey.
Earlier this month, a woman in Queens was arrested on suspicion of killing her boyfriend. In January, a 17-year-old girl was fatally shot in her New Jersey home, and her boyfriend was named as a suspect. A man was recently sentenced for stabbing the mother of his children in front of them on Long Island. In December, a DJ was convicted of fatally stabbing his girlfriend after proposing marriage, and a Chilean man was sentenced for a shooting that killed the son of his girlfriend in Westchester County, New York.
These cases underscore the tragic consequences of domestic disputes and the urgent need for support and intervention. In December, a woman was accused of killing her boyfriend and then crashing a stolen car during an attempt to evade police. In October 2025, a man was charged with homicide after his wife was found dead, having been asphyxiated with a chemical substance. And in January 2020, a young woman was found murdered in New Jersey months after disappearing; her ex-boyfriend, who was out on bail for pornography charges, later confessed to the crime.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, resources are available.
The investigation into the kidnapping and the events surrounding the police chase remains ongoing. González is currently in custody, and further details are expected to emerge as the case progresses. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by violent crime and the dedication of law enforcement to protecting the public.
