Isabel Lohau Receives EM Wildcard, Set for Huelva Return
Huelva, Spain – German badminton player Isabel Lohau has been awarded a wildcard for the 2026 European Championships, marking a significant milestone in her comeback to the international stage. The tournament, scheduled to take place from April 7th to 12th in Huelva, will feature Europe’s top badminton talent.
The news comes as a boost for the German team, and for Lohau personally, after a successful return to domestic competition. She will partner with Dutch player Debora Jille in the women’s doubles event. This wildcard represents a crucial opportunity for Lohau to compete at a high level following her recent achievements, including a gold medal at the German Championships.
A Return to Familiar Territory
Huelva holds special significance for Lohau, as it was the site of her first European Championship medal win in 2018. The city, located in Andalusia, Spain, will once again host the continent’s best players, creating a compelling narrative for Lohau’s return. The 2026 European Championships promise a high level of competition, and Lohau and Jille will be aiming to develop their mark.
Lohau’s path to this point hasn’t been without its challenges. Originally slated to partner with Stine Küspert at the German Championships, a late injury to Küspert necessitated a quick pairing with Yvonne Li. That impromptu partnership proved successful, culminating in a gold medal and setting the stage for the European Championship wildcard opportunity. “The original plan was, of course, to start with Stine there,” Lohau explained. “When it became clear in early February that it wouldn’t function out time-wise, I considered who I could apply for the EM wildcard with in March, along with playing a few tournaments.”
A New Partnership with Debora Jille
The decision to team up with Debora Jille was a strategic one. “She is an experienced player who has been playing women’s doubles at a top level for many years,” Lohau stated. The pairing represents a blend of experience and renewed ambition, as both players look to make a strong showing at the European Championships.
Lohau’s motivation extends beyond simply competing; she views this as a chance to demonstrate her resilience and dedication. “I’ve actually had the EM in mind since July, since I started training again. As a mom, to have the chance to compete on the big stage again, that’s motivating for daily training,” she said. This personal drive underscores the significance of this opportunity for Lohau.
Preparation for Huelva
To prepare for the European Championships, Lohau and Jille plan to participate in the Swiss Open and the Orléans Masters. These tournaments will provide valuable match experience and allow the pair to refine their strategies before arriving in Huelva. “Debora and I now want to play the Swiss Open and the Orléans Masters. That and maybe a few training days around it will be our joint preparation – so rather short and sweet,” Lohau noted.
The prospect of returning to Huelva evokes fond memories for Lohau, adding an emotional layer to her preparation. “I was allowed to receive my first EM medal there in 2018.” Interestingly, Lohau and Jille were opponents at that same championship, adding a unique dynamic to their current partnership. They now aim to compete together for a medal.
