Huelva, Spain – German badminton player Isabel Lohau will compete at the 2026 European Championships in Huelva, Spain, after being awarded a wildcard alongside Dutch partner Deborah Jille. The announcement comes after a series of adjustments to Lohau’s doubles pairings, initially slated to compete with Stine Küspert before a late switch to Yvonne Li due to injury.
The European Championships are scheduled to take place from April 6th to April 12th in Huelva, a city familiar to Lohau, as she previously won her first European Championship medal there. This return to the venue holds particular significance for the German athlete.
Originally, Lohau had planned to partner with Stine Küspert at the German Badminton Championships. However, Küspert sustained an injury, leading to a last-minute pairing with Yvonne Li. The intention was for Lohau and Küspert to team up for the European Championships as well, but Küspert’s recovery timeline made that plan untenable.
“The original plan was, of course, to start with Stine there,” Lohau told the German Badminton Association (DBV). “When it became clear in early February that this would not be feasible, I looked for an alternative. I considered who I could play a few tournaments with in March and also apply for the EM wildcard.”
The Lohau/Jille duo now faces a competitive field at the European Championships. Among the favorites are defending champions Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva, as well as the pairings of Margot Lambert/Camille Pognante and Polina Buhrova/Yevheniia Kantemyr. The tournament promises a high level of competition as Europe’s top badminton players converge in Spain.
Isabel Lohau, born on March 17, 1992, has a distinguished career in badminton, representing Germany in numerous international competitions. Her career includes a World Championship mixed doubles medal in 2022, and European Championship medals in both mixed doubles (2018, 2021, 2022) and women’s doubles (2022). She also has multiple European Mixed Team Championship titles (2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023) and European Women’s Team Championship titles (2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020).
Lohau’s highest world ranking in women’s doubles is 20th, achieved with Linda Efler on September 27, 2022, and in mixed doubles, she reached 7th with Mark Lamsfuß on November 15, 2022. Her consistent performance and dedication to the sport have established her as a key figure in German badminton.
The wildcard selection represents a significant opportunity for Lohau to continue her competitive journey and showcase her skills on the international stage. The pairing with Deborah Jille offers a fresh dynamic, and the duo will undoubtedly be aiming to make a strong impression at the European Championships.
The tournament in Huelva is expected to draw significant attention from badminton fans across Europe. The competition will be a crucial test for Lohau and Jille as they navigate a challenging draw and strive for success.
