Hornets Look to Improve Home Record Against Heat | NBA Preview & Analysis

Charlotte, NC – The Charlotte Hornets aim to improve their performance at home as they commence a seven-game homestand against the Miami Heat on Tuesday night. While the Hornets have shown resilience on the road, their record at the Spectrum Center has been a point of concern this season.

Currently 14-17 at home, compared to a 20-17 mark away from Charlotte, the Hornets are looking to translate their road success to their own arena. Head coach Charles Lee acknowledged the challenge, stating, “We play a lot of really good competition and sometimes you can be too comfortable being home for that many days. The road, at times, makes you uncomfortable, makes you hungry, and we have to have that same hunger at home.”

This matchup is a quick turnaround for both teams, each having enjoyed a two-day break following their respective weekend contests. The Hornets are coming off a 115-102 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday, where Miles Bridges led the scoring with 22 points, and Kon Knueppel added 20 despite shooting 3-for-10 from three-point range.

The Heat, meanwhile, suffered a 121-117 defeat at home against the Orlando Magic on Saturday, ending a seven-game winning streak. During that streak, Miami had secured five victories by double digits, demonstrating their ability to dominate opponents. Despite the loss, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra remains confident in his team’s capabilities, saying, “We have everything we need. We got a high-powered offense, we got a very good defense (and) can be as good as anybody in the league defensively.”

The Hornets and Heat previously met on March 6th, with Miami securing a 128-120 victory in Charlotte. Knueppel led the Hornets in that contest with 27 points, while Brandon Miller contributed 22. Tyler Herro was a key performer for the Heat, scoring 33 points and hitting eight three-pointers.

Miller, who leads the Hornets with an average of 20.4 points per game, had a quieter outing in Saturday’s loss to San Antonio, scoring just six points in 33 minutes while nursing a sore right wrist. The time off should allow him to fully recover for Tuesday’s game.

Charlotte has seen a boost since acquiring Coby White from the Chicago Bulls. White has provided a consistent scoring threat, contributing 13 or more points in four of his seven games with the Hornets. Coach Lee praised White’s impact, saying, “He adds a lot to our environment and to our product on the court. We have a very deep team, but there is something about having a guy like that who’s battle-tested, been through a ton of experiences as a high-level thinker and basketball player.”

Miami will be looking for continued contributions from Bam Adebayo, who has scored 21 and 20 points in his last two games following an 83-point performance against the Washington Wizards the previous Tuesday. Herro, after returning to action Saturday following a brief absence, will be looking to regain his form after scoring 35 total points in his two games back.

The Hornets’ struggles at home are a puzzle they’re determined to solve. It’s a common challenge for teams – the comfort of a familiar environment sometimes leading to a lack of the same intensity seen on the road. But as Lee points out, the Hornets’ fans are a significant asset, and the team needs to harness that energy while maintaining a focused and prepared mindset throughout this extended homestand.

This seven-game stretch at the Spectrum Center presents a crucial opportunity for the Hornets to solidify their position in the Eastern Conference standings. The team will need to demonstrate consistency and a heightened level of focus to capitalize on their home-court advantage and build momentum as the regular season progresses.

Next Up: The Hornets continue their homestand on Friday, March 20th, against the Boston Celtics. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET.
