LAS VEGAS – Tomáš Hertl delivered a clutch overtime goal to lift the Vegas Golden Knights to a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. The 32-year-classic Czech forward similarly registered an assist earlier in the game, earning him first-star honors. Meanwhile, Filip Hronek enjoyed a standout performance for the Vancouver Canucks, recording a goal and two assists, though it wasn’t enough to prevent a 6-4 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. David Rittich suffered a defeat with the New York Islanders, allowing four goals in a 5-1 setback against the Anaheim Ducks.
The Golden Knights opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest, but found themselves trailing 3-1 after the first period. Detroit’s early lead proved unsustainable as Vegas mounted a determined comeback. Ivan Barbashev sparked the rally in the 52nd minute, setting the stage for Hertl’s heroics.
Hertl’s game-tying assist came as he secured a loose puck along the boards and fed Mitch Marner for a crucial goal that sent the game to overtime. In the extra frame, Hertl sealed the win with a power-play goal, completing a skillful play where he received a pass with his back to the net, spun around, and fired a shot past the goaltender at 62:11.
“After the first period, we knew we had to step it up and play with more desire to win,” said Marner, who finished the night with three points (1 goal, 2 assists). “I think we did that for the rest of the game. That’s how we need to play from the start.”
Detroit’s Alex DeBrincat acknowledged his team’s defensive lapse. “We kind of sat back a little too much,” he said. “Even when you’re leading, you need to stay active in the offensive zone. You can’t just wait and let them play. Quality teams will seize advantage of that.”
In Vancouver, Filip Hronek finally broke out of a six-game point drought, making an immediate impact. He put the Canucks ahead 2-1 in the 18th minute with a powerful shot from the right circle, marking his sixth goal of the season. But, Carolina responded with a dominant second period, taking a 5-2 lead.
Hronek added a second point in the 40th minute, assisting on a goal by Brock Boeser during a power play. He completed his three-point night with another assist on a goal by Nils Höglander, bringing the score to 5-4. Despite Hronek’s strong performance, the Canucks couldn’t complete the comeback, as Nikolaj Ehlers completed a hat trick for Carolina to seal the 6-4 victory.
“I liked how hard we played,” Hronek said. “But we need to be consistent throughout the whole game, 35 minutes isn’t enough.” He also praised the team’s improved power play, noting their strong puck movement and combination play.
The New York Islanders fell to the Anaheim Ducks by a score of 5-1. David Rittich allowed four goals on 25 shots. Cutter Gauthier scored twice for Anaheim, while Beckett Sennecke added another goal. Ryan Poehling and Frank Vatrano completed the scoring for the Ducks, with Vatrano’s goal coming on an empty net.
A potential Czech goaltending matchup in Anaheim didn’t materialize. Lukáš Dostál had played the previous night and remained on the bench, while Ville Husso stepped in and delivered an excellent performance, stopping 42 shots, including two from Ondřej Palát, and was named the first star of the game.
The Golden Knights’ victory keeps them firmly in the playoff picture in the Western Conference. Hertl’s continued strong play is a key component of their success, and his ability to deliver in crucial moments is invaluable. Hronek’s breakout performance offers a positive sign for the Canucks, but they’ll need more consistent efforts to climb the standings in a competitive Pacific Division.
Next Up: The Vegas Golden Knights will face the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, March 13th, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Vancouver Canucks will travel to take on the Seattle Kraken on Sunday, March 14th. The New York Islanders will return home to host the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 14th.
