Melbourne, Australia – George Russell of Mercedes delivered a commanding performance at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, kicking off the 2026 Formula 1 season with a decisive victory. The British driver expertly navigated a thrilling race at Melbourne’s Albert Park, finishing ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The race, marking the beginning of a new era for Formula 1, was punctuated by early drama and strategic battles.
The weekend began with setbacks for several teams. Oscar Piastri of McLaren was forced to withdraw before the race even began after a crash during a reconnaissance lap, losing control over a kerb and experiencing a sudden surge of power. Nico Hulkenberg of Audi also faced a pre-race issue, failing to start due to a problem with his car during the installation lap.
The race itself launched with immediate excitement. Leclerc, starting from fourth on the grid, aggressively climbed to the lead by the first corner. Russell, who secured pole position, dropped to second, whereas Lewis Hamilton, starting seventh, quickly advanced to third. The opening laps were characterized by intense competition, with Russell and Leclerc trading the lead six times within the first nine laps.
Russell briefly overtook Leclerc on the second lap, but the Ferrari driver swiftly regained the position on the following lap. This back-and-forth continued until lap eight, when Russell once again took the lead, only to be overtaken by Leclerc immediately after. A pivotal moment came on lap 11 when Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull suffered a mechanical failure, bringing out a virtual safety car (VSC). This prompted Mercedes to bring Russell into the pits, allowing the Ferraris to temporarily move into the top two positions.
Leclerc delayed his pit stop until lap 25, handing the lead to Hamilton. The Mercedes duo of Russell and Antonelli positioned themselves closely behind. On lap 28, Russell seized the opportunity to overtake Hamilton, and as Ferrari brought Leclerc in for his tire change, Antonelli moved into second place, solidifying a strong one-two position for Mercedes. Hamilton emerged from the pits in fourth.
From that point forward, Russell maintained control of the race, expertly managing his tires and pace. He crossed the finish line 2.9 seconds ahead of Antonelli, securing his sixth career victory and a dominant one-two finish for Mercedes. Leclerc held off a late charge from Hamilton to claim the final spot on the podium, finishing 12.5 seconds behind Russell.
Reigning World Champion Lando Norris finished fifth, successfully defending his position against a determined Max Verstappen, who mounted an impressive recovery drive from 20th on the grid, ultimately finishing sixth. Oliver Bearman of Haas secured seventh place, while British rookie Arvid Lindblad impressed on his Formula 1 debut, finishing eighth and earning points. Gabriel Bortoleto of Audi finished ninth, marking the team’s first points of the season, and Pierre Gasly rounded out the top ten for Alpine.
The race also saw retirements from Fernando Alonso and Valtteri Bottas, adding to the drama of the Australian Grand Prix.
Russell’s victory marks a significant statement for Mercedes at the start of the new F1 era. The team’s strategic execution, combined with the strong performance of both Russell and Antonelli, positions them as early contenders in the championship battle.
The next race on the Formula 1 calendar is the Chinese Grand Prix, scheduled for March 15th, followed by the Japanese Grand Prix two weeks later. Teams will undoubtedly analyze the data from Melbourne and bring upgrades to Shanghai as they continue to develop their cars throughout the season.
