SC Freiburg and FSV Mainz 05 both secured historic victories in European competition on Thursday, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Europa League and Conference League, respectively. However, the night wasn’t without disappointment for German clubs, as VfB Stuttgart were eliminated from the Europa League after falling to FC Porto.
Europa League: Freiburg Makes History
SC Freiburg reached the Europa League quarterfinal for the first time in club history, capping off a remarkable run in the competition. The Bundesliga side defeated KRC Genk 5-1 (2-1 on aggregate) in the second leg of their round of 16 tie, completing a convincing turnaround after a 1-0 defeat in Belgium the previous week. This marks the greatest international success in Freiburg’s history.
Matthias Ginter opened the scoring for Freiburg in the 19th minute, followed by Igor Matanovic just six minutes later. Vincenzo Grifo extended the lead in the 53rd minute, with Yuito Suzuki and Maximilian Eggestein adding goals in the 56th and 79th minutes, respectively. Matte Smets scored a consolation goal for Genk in the 39th minute, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Freiburg’s progression.
VfB Stuttgart’s European Run Ends
VfB Stuttgart’s Europa League campaign came to an end with a 2-0 defeat to FC Porto in the second leg of their round of 16 clash. Despite creating numerous chances, Stuttgart were unable to find the back of the net, missing out on their first European quarterfinal appearance in almost 30 years. The first leg had ended in a 2-1 victory for Porto in Stuttgart.
William Gomes gave Porto the lead in the 21st minute, and Victor Froholdt added a second in the 72nd minute. Adding to Stuttgart’s woes, Nikolas Nartey received a red card in the 77th minute, further diminishing their hopes of a comeback.
Conference League: Mainz 05 Reaches Fresh Heights
FSV Mainz 05 also achieved a historic milestone, reaching the quarterfinal of the Conference League for the first time in the club’s history. Urs Fischer’s side defeated Sigma Olomouc 2-0 (0-0 on aggregate) in the second leg of their round of 16 tie, following a goalless draw in the Czech Republic.
Stefan Posch broke the deadlock for Mainz in the 46th minute, and Armindo Sieb sealed the victory with a goal in the 82nd minute. Mainz finished the match with a numerical advantage after Sigma Olomouc’s Peter Barath was sent off with a red card in the 76th minute.
The victories for Freiburg and Mainz represent a positive step for German football on the European stage, while Stuttgart will be left to rue missed opportunities. Freiburg’s quarterfinal draw will be eagerly anticipated, as they appear to continue their impressive run in the Europa League. Mainz, meanwhile, will aim to build on their historic achievement and develop a deep run in the Conference League.
