Free Self-Defense Class for Women & Girls in Culiacán: Empowering Sinaloa This International Women’s Day

CULIACÁN, Sinaloa – The Instituto Sinaloense de Cultura Física y el Deporte (ISDE) is joining forces with the national “Mujeres Imparables” (Unstoppable Women) campaign to offer a free National Self-Defense Class focused on equality and combating violence. The class is scheduled for this Sunday at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento Deportivo (CARD) in Culiacán.

The initiative, announced on March 5, 2026, aims to empower girls and women aged eight and older by providing them with fundamental self-defense skills. It’s a collaborative effort supported by the Mexican government, the Comisión Nacional de Cultura Física y Deporte (CONADE), the Sinaloa State Government, the ISDE, and the Secretaría de las Mujeres (SEMUJERES). The program underscores a growing national focus on women’s safety and empowerment through practical skills training.

The class has the backing of the Sinaloa State Government, with Governor Rubén Rocha Moya reaffirming the state’s commitment to gender equality, violence eradication, and the advancement of women’s roles within Sinaloan society. This support highlights a broader governmental strategy to address gender-based violence and promote women’s well-being.

Participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt, and registration is available through this link. The class will be led by judo instructor Sara Medina, who emphasized the importance of the event coinciding with the commemoration of International Women’s Day.

“this is to commemorate Women’s Day, to validate the fact that women have a voice, have a vote, and can likewise defend themselves,” Medina stated. Her comments reflect the core message of the “Mujeres Imparables” campaign – empowering women to assert their agency and protect themselves.

Medina explained that judo, the discipline underpinning the class, originated as a martial art derived from Jujitsu, specifically created with self-defense principles at its core. “In judo, we leverage the opponent’s strength to execute an action. Reaction-action is incredibly important in the face of any type of attack. We find various defense and counterattack techniques, even on the ground, that allow you to neutralize a situation without causing harm, simply by defending yourself,” she detailed.

The initiative is open to girls eight years of age and older, as well as women of all ages. Notably, the class will also feature participation from prominent Sinaloan athletes, many of whom are medalists in national and international competitions. These athletes will lend their support and further strengthen the initiative’s message.

The ISDE’s involvement reaffirms its dedication to promoting equality, sports, and creating safe spaces that contribute to the comprehensive development and empowerment of women in Sinaloa. This class represents a tangible step towards fostering a more secure and equitable environment for women throughout the region.

The timing of this event, coinciding with International Women’s Day, is deliberate. It serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing need to address gender-based violence and to empower women with the tools and confidence to protect themselves. The “Mujeres Imparables” campaign, and this specific class, are part of a larger movement to create a society where women feel safe, respected, and empowered.

For those interested in participating, the class will be held this Sunday at 9:00 AM at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento Deportivo (CARD) in Culiacán. The free class and commemorative t-shirt make it an accessible opportunity for women and girls to gain valuable self-defense skills.

The next step for those interested is to register via the provided link. The ISDE and its partners will continue to promote similar initiatives aimed at empowering women and fostering a culture of safety and respect within the community.
