Béziers, France – A youth football match between Lavérune and Béziers Football Club at the U16 level was abruptly halted Saturday evening after a parent invaded the pitch, allegedly brandishing a knife and assaulting players. The incident, which occurred in Lavérune, left three players from Béziers with minor injuries and sparked a police investigation.
The match, a league contest within the Hérault district, was nearing its conclusion when the parent reportedly scaled the security fencing surrounding the playing field. Initial reports indicate the individual began shouting, demanding that no one touch his son, before physically attacking a young player. According to witnesses and reporting from Midi Libre, a punch was thrown, connecting with the face of a Béziers player, resulting in a broken tooth.
The situation escalated when the parent allegedly produced a knife, threatening two additional players from Béziers. One player sustained a mark on his neck, another an injury to his forearm, and a third had his jersey torn during the altercation. A fourth player intervened, managing to subdue the parent briefly before the individual fled the scene.
“Three of our players are slightly injured,” a parent from Béziers told Midi Libre. “But the kids were frightened by what happened. They were very scared. They had never seen anything like it.”
Following the incident, players from Béziers sought refuge in the stadium’s changing rooms, awaiting the arrival of law enforcement and emergency services. Gendarmes and firefighters were called to the scene to secure the area and provide support to the shaken players. The team reportedly didn’t abandon the stadium until nearly 11 PM local time (9 PM UTC).
Upon returning to Béziers, the injured players were expected to receive medical attention to document their injuries and subsequently file a formal complaint with the police. The district football authorities have been notified, and the match official documented the interruption in their game report.
Authorities are currently searching for the parent, who remains at large. Witnesses indicated the individual was likely a parent of a player on the Lavérune team, as his outburst centered around protecting his son. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as authorities gather more information.
This incident underscores the increasing concerns surrounding the behavior of some parents at youth sporting events. While passion for the game is understandable, the intrusion onto the field and alleged use of a weapon represent a serious breach of conduct and a potential threat to the safety of young athletes. The French Football Federation (FFF) has not yet released a statement regarding the incident, but it is likely to review security protocols at youth matches in light of this event.
Béziers Football Club’s U16 team is scheduled to play ENT. Meze Loupian 2 on Sunday, March 29th, at 10:30 AM local time (8:30 AM UTC). It remains to be seen if the events of Saturday evening will impact the team’s preparation or participation in the upcoming match. The club has not yet commented on the availability of the injured players.
