FIT Almere Battles Past DKC to Reach National Championship Final

Den Bosch, Netherlands – FIT Almere secured their place in the Dutch national badminton championship final this weekend, overcoming a tough challenge from DKC in a two-leg playoff. The Almeerders will face familiar rivals Duinwijck in the final on March 22nd at the Maasport in Den Bosch, seeking to defend the title they surprisingly won last year.

The road to the final wasn’t without its challenges. FIT Almere first traveled to The Hague on Saturday evening, where they emerged with a 3-5 victory. The match featured several closely contested games, with two decided in the third-game extension. Key wins came from Noah Haase in the men’s singles and the mixed doubles pairing of Joep Strooper and Kirsten de Wit.

Dramatic Return Leg Seals the Deal

Returning home on Sunday, FIT Almere needed to secure four points to definitively advance. The pressure was on, but the team delivered, culminating in a decisive victory sealed by Diede Odijk. Odijk’s performance proved pivotal, securing the final point needed to book their spot in the championship match.

Key Battles and Turning Points

The men’s doubles proved to be a highlight of the tie, with Alex Vlaar and Dyon van Wijlick facing Michiel Kruijt and Gijs Duijs in two thrilling encounters. Both matches went the distance, providing plenty of entertainment for the fans. Almere took the first game in the initial match, but DKC rallied to win the subsequent two. The return match saw a reversal of fortune, with FIT Almere claiming a hard-fought victory after dropping the first game.

In the women’s doubles, Kirsten de Wit and Diede Odijk dominated their matches against Chloe Tsai and Tejaswini Vengatesh, securing comfortable wins on both days. Their consistent performance provided a crucial foundation for Almere’s success.

The men’s singles clash between Noah Haase and Mark Caljouw in The Hague was a particularly captivating contest. After Caljouw took the first game, Haase responded with a win in the second, setting up a tense deciding game. The third game was a back-and-forth affair, with neither player able to establish a significant lead. Haase prevailed in a nail-biting finish, winning 24-22 in the extension. Haase continued his strong form in the return leg, securing a more straightforward victory.

Chen’s Resilience and Koppen’s Dominance

Alida Chen faced a formidable opponent in Dutch champion Flora Wang. Although Chen started strongly in the first match, she couldn’t capitalize on an early lead, ultimately losing the game. The second game saw Wang maintain a consistent advantage. However, Chen demonstrated resilience in the return match, staging a remarkable comeback after falling behind 8-20 in the second game to eventually win 22-20. Despite a strong start to the third game, Wang ultimately secured the win for DKC.

Dennis Koppen had a successful outing against Thomas Sibbald, winning both matches convincingly with scores of 21-13 in each game. However, the second match was cut short when Diede Odijk clinched the decisive point on another court, ending the tie.

Odijk’s Decisive Performance

Diede Odijk’s performance against Jaymie Laurens was crucial to FIT Almere’s success. She avenged a previous loss to Laurens at the Dutch National Championships during the first leg, winning a hard-fought match. In the return leg, Odijk continued her dominance, securing a decisive victory with a score of 21-9 in the second game, effectively sealing FIT Almere’s place in the final.

Doubles Play Proves Key

The mixed doubles pairing of Joep Strooper and Kirsten de Wit also played a vital role. They overcame a difficult first game against Gijs Duijs and Flora Wang to secure a 22-20 victory in the third, earning a crucial point for Almere in the first leg. The return leg mixed doubles were not played as FIT Almere had already secured the necessary four points.

Alex Vlaar and Alida Chen competed in the second mixed doubles match against Mark Caljouw and Jaymie Laurens, but were unable to secure a win. This match was also not played in the return leg due to Almere already achieving the required points.

Rematch with Duinwijck Looms

FIT Almere now prepares for a rematch with Duinwijck, the team they defeated in last year’s final. Duinwijck qualified for the final with relative ease, winning 5-0 and 4-1 against Drop Shot. Duinwijck will be looking for revenge, but FIT Almere is determined to retain their title on home soil.

The championship final will be held on Sunday, March 22nd, at the Maasport in Den Bosch.
