Filippo Ganna Wins Tirreno-Adriatico Stage 1 with Record-Breaking Time Trial

Ganna Dominates Tirreno-Adriatico Opener, Sets New Course Record

Lido di Camaiore, Italy – Filippo Ganna of Ineos Grenadiers kicked off the 61st edition of Tirreno-Adriatico with a commanding victory in the opening stage time trial on Monday. The Italian national time trial champion completed the 11.5-kilometer course in a blistering 12 minutes and 8 seconds, establishing a new record for the fastest time ever recorded in the “Race of the Two Seas.” This marks Ganna’s fourth win in the Tirreno-Adriatico opening time trial.

The performance was a statement of intent from Ganna, who averaged a remarkable 56.2 km/h on the flat coastal course. He surpassed his own previous best time on the same course from last year (12:17), demonstrating significant gains in form. The victory secures him the first leader’s jersey, the maglia azzurra, of the seven-stage race that concludes Sunday in San Benedetto del Tronto.

Ineos Grenadiers Dominate the Podium

Ganna wasn’t alone in showcasing Ineos Grenadiers’ strength. Teammate Thymen Arensman finished a strong second, 22 seconds behind Ganna, signaling his ambitions for the general classification. Magnus Sheffield as well delivered a noteworthy performance, securing fourth place overall for the British superteam. This early display of dominance sets Ineos Grenadiers as a team to watch throughout the week.

“It’s stage win number five for me in Tirreno and every time is special and complicated to do my best. It’s never easy,” Ganna said after the stage, as reported by Ineos Grenadiers. “Today in the middle of the stage I didn’t feel good, but I kept on chasing.”

Looking Ahead: San Gimignano and a Gravel Sector

The race doesn’t allow Ganna much time to savor his victory. Stage two heads to San Gimignano, and presents a different challenge: a 5-kilometer gravel sector near the finish. This will immediately test the riders’ versatility and could shake up the general classification. Ganna acknowledged this, stating he was already reviewing the stage finish.

“Yesterday I was just focused on today. Tonight we will recover well and then tomorrow I will check the stage finish of tomorrow,” Ganna explained. He clarified his focus for this race isn’t on overall contention, but rather on building form for the upcoming Classics season. “I came here to Tirreno without the ambition to [target] the GC, just to do an amazing Tirreno and have the feeling for the Classics. This represents a good starting point and now we’ll see in the next few days what One can do in the race.”

This victory marks Ganna’s 38th professional road win and his 31st in a time trial, further solidifying his reputation as one of the world’s premier time trialists. The Italian’s performance sets a high bar for the competition as Tirreno-Adriatico progresses.

The race continues Tuesday with the challenging stage to San Gimignano, where the gravel sector promises to create a dynamic and unpredictable day of racing. Fans can follow the action live as the contenders battle for position and the coveted maglia azzurra.

Next up: Stage 2 of Tirreno-Adriatico, finishing in San Gimignano, Italy, on Tuesday, March 10th.
