FIFA Confirms: BVB’s Chukwuemeka to Play for Austria National Team

DORTMUND, Germany – Borussia Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has been cleared to represent the Austrian national team, FIFA confirmed Monday. The decision comes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and marks a significant boost for Austria’s midfield options.

Born in Vienna in 2003 to Nigerian parents, Chukwuemeka moved to Great Britain at the age of two. He had represented England at various youth levels, most recently featuring for the U-20 squad, but hadn’t earned a senior cap, opening the door for Austria to pursue his international allegiance. According to reports, the 22-year-classic’s last appearance for an England youth side was in the U-20 World Cup round of 16 in May 2023, after which he received no further call-ups.

This marks the second successful attempt by Austria to recruit a player born within its borders. PSV Eindhoven midfielder Paul Wanner, too eligible to represent Austria, recently confirmed his switch from Germany. Both players could feature in upcoming friendly matches against Ghana on March 27th and South Korea on March 31st, both to be played in Vienna. Still, Chukwuemeka is currently dealing with muscular issues, potentially impacting his availability for those fixtures.

A Valuable Addition to the ÖFB Squad

While Chukwuemeka’s market value of €25 million doesn’t place him among the top 50 most valuable English footballers, he ranks as the second-most valuable player in the Austrian national team, behind Bayern Munich right-back Konrad Laimer (€32 million). He will likely partner with fellow Borussia Dortmund player Marcel Sabitzer in midfield for Austria.

Chukwuemeka joined Borussia Dortmund on loan from Chelsea last year, with the German club subsequently making the move permanent for a reported €20 million. In 47 appearances for Dortmund, he has scored four goals and provided two assists. Under coach Niko Kovac, Chukwuemeka has seen regular playing time, though often as a substitute, starting in eight of his 30 appearances this season. Recurring muscular problems have unfortunately limited his playing time.

The pursuit of Chukwuemeka was reportedly a priority for Austrian team manager Ralf Rangnick, who had previously attempted to convince the player to switch allegiances three years ago. At the time, Rangnick stated, “As far as we know, he is a player who wants to play for England and not for Austria.” Chukwuemeka has since changed his mind, opting to represent the nation of his birth.

The FIFA approval of Chukwuemeka’s switch, alongside Wanner’s, provides Rangnick with increased tactical flexibility ahead of the World Cup. Austria, returning to the men’s World Cup stage for the first time since 1998, has been drawn into a challenging Group F alongside defending champions Argentina, Algeria, and Jordan. Their opening match is scheduled for June 16th against Jordan at the San Francisco 49ers’ stadium.

Chukwuemeka’s journey to this point is noteworthy. After joining Aston Villa’s academy from Northampton Town in 2016, he signed his first professional contract with Villa in 2020. He made his senior debut for Aston Villa in May 2021, and later moved to Chelsea in 2022 before his loan spell to Dortmund. His versatility, capable of playing as an attacking midfielder or left winger, will be a valuable asset for Rangnick’s team.

The decision by both Chukwuemeka and Wanner to represent Austria underscores Rangnick’s success in attracting talent to the national team. Austria’s upcoming matches against Ghana and South Korea will provide an early opportunity to assess how the new additions integrate into the squad. However, Chukwuemeka’s current fitness concerns remain a point of attention for the Austrian coaching staff.

For Chukwuemeka, this switch represents a fresh start and a chance to compete on the international stage with a nation he feels connected to. His experience in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund will undoubtedly be beneficial as he adapts to the Austrian national team setup. The coming months will be crucial as he aims to establish himself as a key player for Austria in their World Cup campaign.

The Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) will be hoping that Chukwuemeka’s addition, alongside Wanner, will provide a significant boost to their chances of progressing from a difficult World Cup group. The team’s performance in the upcoming friendlies will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike, as they seek to gauge the impact of the new recruits.

Next up for Chukwuemeka and Borussia Dortmund is a Bundesliga match against [Opponent to be confirmed], scheduled for [Date and Time to be confirmed]. Fans can follow updates on the ÖFB website and social media channels for the latest news on Chukwuemeka’s fitness and potential inclusion in the squad for the upcoming friendlies.
