Erzgebirge Aue: Tarnat on Future, Relegation & Potential Regional League Plans

Aue Prepares for Potential Fourth-Tier Future, Tarnat Remains Tight-Lipped

Mannheim, Germany – The weight of a potential relegation battle is intensifying for Erzgebirge Aue, and sporting director Michael Tarnat is navigating a delicate balance between maintaining hope and preparing for the very real possibility of competing in the Regionalliga next season. Following a weekend where results didn’t fall their way, Aue finds itself increasingly focused on contingency planning, even as the mathematical possibility of staying in the 3. Liga remains.

The recent matchday saw opportunities slip through Aue’s grasp. With both fellow relegation contenders, Saarbrücken and Hoffenheim II, failing to secure points, a positive result against Waldhof Mannheim could have reignited their survival hopes. Though, the loss leaves them facing a stark reality: a deeper consideration of life outside of the third division. As of March 24, 2026, Aue sits 18th in the 3. Liga table, nine points from safety with ten matches remaining.

Tarnat, echoing sentiments expressed by board member Jens Haustein, is hesitant to publicly discuss scenarios involving relegation. “As long as it’s mathematically possible, I don’t want to comment publicly on the relegation scenario. If the players are constantly reading about the fourth division, they’ll lose the last spark of hope and belief,” Tarnat stated, according to reporting from TAG24. This approach, while understandable in terms of maintaining morale, presents a challenge when it comes to proactive roster planning.

Delaying preparations for the Regionalliga could prove costly, given that a potential relegation would likely necessitate a significant overhaul of the squad. With 14 player contracts expiring at the end of the season, the club faces a complex task of determining which players might be willing to continue with Aue in a lower division. The uncertainty surrounding the future is further compounded by the lack of clarity regarding which players currently under contract possess clauses allowing them to move to other clubs should Aue be relegated.

Tarnat is similarly remaining guarded about his own future at the club, stating he will address that question only once the sporting situation becomes clearer. He has not yet initiated contract talks with any players, deferring those discussions until the team’s fate is sealed. Interestingly, no players have proactively approached Tarnat to discuss their potential commitment to the club in the event of relegation.

Despite the uncertainty, Aue is receiving inquiries from agents representing potential signings for the Regionalliga. Tarnat hasn’t commented on whether he is secretly compiling a “shadow squad” in preparation for a drop to the fourth tier. However, he did emphasize his clear vision for the style of play he wants to implement, stating, “I definitely have a clear idea of the kind of football I want to play. The fans can be sure that if we don’t manage to stay up, a powerful team will be starting in the summer that will attack and compete for promotion.”

When pressed on whether he would be leading the squad-building process himself, Tarnat remained evasive, acknowledging recent internal disagreements within the club but declining to comment further. “I expected this question. Of course, I’m aware of that, but I don’t want to say anything about it,” he said.

Aue’s next challenge comes against Meuselwitz on March 30, 2026. The team will need a significant turnaround in form to climb out of the relegation zone. The club’s fate hangs in the balance, and Tarnat’s ability to navigate this challenging period will be crucial, regardless of which league Aue finds itself competing in next season.

The situation at Erzgebirge Aue underscores the precarious nature of professional football, where a single season can dramatically alter a club’s trajectory. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether Aue can defy the odds and maintain its status in the 3. Liga, or whether it must begin the arduous task of rebuilding in the Regionalliga.
