ENVERMEU PETIT-CAUX, France – The fourth annual “Guêpes Envermeudoises” (Envermeu Wasps) badminton tournament, hosted by the Envermeu Petit-Caux Badminton club, concluded recently as a resounding success, drawing nearly 300 players over a weekend and setting fresh participation records. The event, a cornerstone of the local sporting calendar, continues to grow in popularity, attracting competitors from across Normandy and beyond.
What began as a modest local competition has rapidly evolved into a highly anticipated event, celebrated for its organization, competitive spirit, and welcoming atmosphere. Organizers reported unprecedented demand, with the 200 available slots filling in just 20 minutes – a significant acceleration from five weeks in the tournament’s inaugural year, two weeks the following year, and a weekend last year. This surge in interest underscores the club’s growing reputation and the increasing appeal of badminton in the region.
Record Participation and Broad Regional Representation
A total of 282 players registered to compete across various disciplines – singles (men’s and women’s), men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles – with 232 ultimately taking to the courts. The tournament drew participants from a wide geographical area, including clubs from Paris and the Île-de-France region. Among the strongest represented clubs were Longueville Dieppe, fielding 40 players and earning the trophy for overall match results (5 first-place finishes, 3 second-place finishes, and 14 third or fourth-place finishes), and Lagny-sur-Marne from Seine-et-Marne, bringing a contingent of over 30 players. MDMSA (Maromme, Déville, Mont-Saint-Aignan) also sent a strong delegation of around 20 players, alongside Luneray with approximately 10.
High-Caliber Competition and a Growing Skill Level
The tournament featured a total of 325 matches played throughout the weekend, with 103 requiring a decisive third set, indicating a highly competitive field. The level of play has demonstrably improved in recent years, boosted by the participation of players ranked at the regional (R) and national (N) levels, up to N2. This influx of skilled competitors led to several high-quality matches, particularly during the finals.
The women’s doubles category saw a particularly significant increase in registrations, with nine pairs on the waiting list – a trend organizers will consider when planning future events. Players like Xianfang Lin (women’s singles, Series 1), Louise Tanguy (women’s singles, Series 2), Clara Leroux and Daphné Leroux (women’s doubles, Series 2, representing Pontoise), Noé Mendy (men’s singles, Series 3), and Julien Gérard and Marc Pichon (men’s doubles, Series 4) all secured notable second-place finishes.
