Shooting Near Dumfries Basketball Court Leaves One Dead, Four Injured
DUMFRIES, Virginia – A shooting at a basketball court in Dumfries, Virginia, on Monday evening, March 9, 2026, left one 18-year-old man dead and four others injured, according to Prince William County Police. The incident occurred in the Potomac Shores area and is currently under investigation.
Police responded to reports of gunfire around 5:35 p.m. In the 1800 block of Potomac Shores Parkway, near the Potomac Shores Fitness Barn, a recreational center. The initial call indicated a shooting had taken place during a basketball game.
Authorities stated that several individuals were playing basketball when another group arrived, leading to a dispute that escalated into a shooting. Following the gunfire, those involved dispersed from the scene. Investigators do not believe the shooting was random.
Upon arrival, officers discovered one male victim with a gunshot wound. Further investigation led to the discovery of another injured individual at a nearby residence on Spring Cress Drive. Three additional victims transported themselves to area hospitals for treatment. In total, five males, ranging in age from 16 to 20, sustained gunshot injuries.
The 18-year-old man from Dumfries was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Police have not yet released his identity, pending notification of his family. The remaining four injured individuals are expected to recover from their injuries, according to investigators.
A witness who spoke with FOX 5 reported that approximately 50 people were present at the basketball court when the altercation began. The witness stated that one individual produced a firearm and discharged it at least twice, prompting a widespread effort to seek safety.
Detectives with the Prince William County Police Department are actively investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting and identifying all individuals involved. The suspect reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle following the incident.
