FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to terms with veteran cornerback Derion Kendrick, adding depth to a secondary that allowed the most passing yards per game in the NFL last season. The move, finalized on March 25, 2026, represents a full-circle moment for Kendrick, who grew up a Cowboys fan.
Kendrick, who has played three full seasons in his NFL career, expressed his excitement about joining “America’s Team.” He described it as a dream come true, recalling his childhood days playing football as a “Rock Hill Cowboy” in South Carolina. “I can’t explain it. I started out like this,” Kendrick said, referencing his youth football experience. “Life comes in full circles. It’s God’s timing.”
The Cowboys have been actively addressing their needs at cornerback this offseason, and Kendrick is the fourth external defensive back they’ve signed in free agency, joining Cobie Durant, Corey Ballentine, and others. This influx of talent is a clear indication of new defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s priority to improve the pass defense.
Kendrick’s journey to Dallas has included stops with the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks. Originally a sixth-round pick by the Rams in 2022, he spent two seasons in Los Angeles before joining Seattle for the 2025 season. He was released by the Seahawks in late November of last year and subsequently re-signed with the Rams, playing in five games for them before becoming a free agent again.
The 25-year-old Kendrick, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 190 pounds, describes himself as a “smart, feisty, physical and ball-aware corner.” He’ll be looking to contribute immediately to a Cowboys defense that struggled against the pass in 2025. His ability to compete against top receivers will be crucial as he integrates into the team’s scheme.
Interestingly, Kendrick’s time with the Seahawks and Rams last year provided him with valuable practice experience against some of the NFL’s elite wide receivers, including Jaxson Smith-Njigba, Puka Nacua, and Davante Adams. He anticipates that this preparation will be beneficial as he faces Cowboys’ star receiver CeeDee Lamb and his former college teammate, George Pickens, in training camp. “I played with GP in college. He’s a great guy. He loves to compete. So do I. Those are going to be great practice reps to get ready for Sundays,” Kendrick stated.
Kendrick’s collegiate career began at Clemson, where he played wide receiver before transitioning to cornerback. He later transferred to Georgia, where he won a national championship in 2021. He was a two-time CFP national champion, earning first-team All-ACC honors in 2020 and second-team All-SEC honors in 2021.
The Cowboys now boast a cornerback room consisting of nine players: Derion Kendrick, Cobie Durant, Corey Ballentine, DaRon Bland, Shavon Revel, Calen Carson, Josh Butler, Reddy Steward, and Trikweze Bridges. The competition for playing time will be fierce throughout training camp, and Parker will be looking for players who can consistently craft plays and contribute to a more formidable pass defense.
Kendrick signed a one-year contract with the Cowboys, providing the team with flexibility as they evaluate his performance and potential long-term fit. This short-term deal allows both Kendrick and the Cowboys to assess the relationship without a long-term commitment.
The addition of Kendrick is a strategic move for the Cowboys, addressing a critical demand in their secondary and adding a player with a compelling personal connection to the team. As he prepares to don the iconic silver and blue, Kendrick is eager to contribute to the Cowboys’ success and fulfill a lifelong dream.
The Cowboys will begin their offseason workouts in April, providing Kendrick with his first opportunity to practice with his new teammates and learn the team’s defensive system. Fans will be watching closely to see how he integrates into the secondary and whether he can grow a key contributor to the Cowboys’ defense.
Next up for the Cowboys is the NFL Draft, scheduled for April 25-27. The team will look to add further talent to their roster, potentially addressing other positions of need. Following the draft, the focus will shift to training camp, where Kendrick and the rest of the Cowboys will prepare for the 2026 season.
