He had begun his eighth season in the NBA with the Thunder, having previously played for the Washington Wizards and San Antonio Spurs. He was originally drafted by the Indiana Pacers with the 42nd overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft and immediately traded to the Spurs, becoming only the second Latvian player to be drafted into the NBA.
Bertāns’ journey to professional basketball began with BS “Rīga/Pols” in 2006, and he progressed through various Latvian and European clubs, including ASK Kadeti II, BK Rīga, BK Ķeizarmežs, DSN/Rīga, BK Barons, and Ļubļanas “Olimpija”. He similarly had a successful stint with Belgradas “Partizan”, winning the Adriatic League championship in 2013 and securing three Serbian championships (2012-2014) and a Serbian Cup title in 2012. He also won three Slovenian Cup titles from 2010-2012.
The decision to extend Bertāns’ contract comes amidst a complex geopolitical landscape in the Middle East. Whereas the club has not directly addressed any potential impact of regional conflicts, the announcement underscores a commitment to stability and continuity within the team. The club’s ability to secure key players like Bertāns, even during uncertain times, speaks to the growing appeal of basketball in the region.

His experience and leadership will be valuable as Dubai continues to compete in both the EuroLeague and the Adriatic League. Fans in Latvia will undoubtedly follow his progress with interest, hoping to notice him continue to excel on the court.
