Amsterdam – David Kalokoh, the 20-year-old forward with Ajax Amsterdam’s youth system, is at a pivotal point in his young career. After scoring the decisive goal for Jong Ajax against his former club VVV-Venlo on March 12, 2026, Kalokoh spoke candidly about his desire for more playing time and a clear path forward with the Dutch giants. The goal, though somewhat disputed in its final attribution, represents a bright spot in a season largely spent on the bench, and a potential turning point as a new manager takes the helm.
The match against VVV-Venlo, played at De Koel in Venlo, saw Jong Ajax secure a narrow victory. Whereas Pharell Nash initially appeared to have scored, Kalokoh confirmed he applied the finishing touch, though he admitted some uncertainty about whether the ball had fully crossed the line before his intervention. “I gave it that last touch, but I’m not sure if it was over the line,” Kalokoh said, adding, “I think it’s my goal.”
This goal carries particular weight for Kalokoh, who rejoined his former team. He joined Ajax in 2018 after spending six years with VVV Venlo, having initially been scouted from VV Vos in 2012. “Scoring is always special, but against your old club, it’s extra special, especially when you win,” he explained. The strike was his third in the Eerste Divisie this season, coming in his 34th appearance for Jong Ajax.
Yet, the path to consistent playing time hasn’t been easy. Kalokoh has found himself frequently on the bench, making only eight appearances as a substitute this season before the match against VVV-Venlo, and enduring a stretch of six consecutive games without seeing any minutes. “I have to show myself and then I’ll secure more minutes,” Kalokoh stated. “The coach made other choices. I had to accept that, but it took a long time before I got minutes again. Then you have to rebuild your match rhythm.”
The recent departure of Óscar García, who gave Kalokoh limited opportunities, has opened a new chapter with the appointment of Paul Nuijten. Kalokoh is optimistic about the change. “New coach, new chances,” he said, adding that he’s had positive conversations with Nuijten and hopes to earn more playing time. This optimism is crucial as Kalokoh approaches a critical juncture in his development.
Kalokoh acknowledges the difficulty of his current situation. “It’s tough, of course,” he admitted. “Especially when you know how good you can be and you’re just doing your best. That makes it difficult. Now, with a new coach, I’m really going for it. It’s about getting more minutes and trying to be in the starting lineup in the final games.”
With 68 appearances for Jong Ajax under his belt, Kalokoh is nearing the age of 21. The situation echoes that of Nassef Chourak, who recently departed Jong Ajax after a similar number of appearances. Former Ajax figure Jordi Cruijff has suggested that players over 21 who haven’t broken into the first team may have missed their opportunity. Kalokoh is aware of this pressure. “I want to finish the season as well as possible and then sit down with my agent and see what’s best for me.”
Kalokoh’s contract with Ajax runs until mid-2027, providing some security, but his priority remains playing time. “You never know what will happen in the summer. I want to play, that’s the most vital thing. If that can be at Ajax, that would be great. Otherwise, we’ll have to look further, but I’d prefer to stay at Ajax.”
Born in Sierra Leone before moving to Venlo, Kalokoh has represented the Netherlands at various youth levels, including the U15, U17, and U18 teams. Standing at 1.86m (6’1”), he’s described as a left-footed winger, though he’s versatile enough to play multiple attacking positions. His journey from the youth ranks of VVV-Venlo to Ajax’s academy, and his subsequent professional contract at age 15, highlights his potential.
