Czech Republic Secures Two Medals at World Indoor Championships in Toruń
TORUŃ, Poland – The Czech Republic celebrated a successful showing at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland, securing two medals over the weekend. Following Saturday’s gold medal win by 400m specialist Lurdes Gloria Manuel, Michaela Švábíková added a bronze medal in the women’s high jump on Sunday, marking a significant achievement for Czech athletics.
Švábíková Claims Bronze in Dramatic High Jump Competition
Švábíková’s bronze medal marks her first podium finish at a World Championships event. The competition was a thrilling affair, with nine athletes clearing a height of 4.70 meters, demonstrating a high level of skill and competition. Švábíková, while unable to match her personal best or the Czech record, capitalized on the struggles of her rivals to secure the medal.
“I’m thrilled, it’s my first medal from a World Championship,” Švábíková told Czech Television. “I’m a little disappointed about 4.80m, I think I could have done it. The competition was incredible, nine girls over 4.70m, I didn’t expect that. We knew it would reach down to the first attempts.”
The drama intensified as Švábíková failed on her third attempt at 4.80 meters. She then faced an anxious wait to see if any of the remaining four competitors, including 2024 World Indoor Championship silver medalist Eliza McCartney of Fresh Zealand, could clear the height. McCartney, who had previously cleared 4.81 meters earlier this year, ultimately failed to do so, securing Švábíková’s bronze medal.
“The waiting was unpleasant,” Švábíková explained. “Honestly, we thought Eliza McCartney would clear it. When she didn’t, we all cheered, and it was beautiful. If she had cleared it, I would have blamed myself for not making 4.80m.”
Švábíková’s coach, Jiřina Kudličková, also experienced a moment of triumph, recalling her own silver medal at the 2014 World Indoor Championships in Sopot. “Jiřka is thrilled, I saw tears in her eyes. I’m glad I’m getting closer to her and closer to the high jump heights. That I’m trying them and that I can actually do them,” Švábíková added.
Caudery Secures Gold in High Jump
Great Britain’s Molly Caudery claimed the gold medal in the women’s high jump, clearing 4.85 meters on her second attempt. Šutejová was unable to clear the same height. Caudery’s victory builds upon her success at the 2024 World Indoor Championships in Glasgow.
Hodgkinson Sets Championship Record in 800m
The British success continued with Keely Hodgkinson’s dominant performance in the women’s 800 meters. Hodgkinson secured her first World Indoor Championship title with a time of 1:55.30, surpassing the previous championship record held by Czech athlete Ludmila Formanová since 1999.
Charlton Equals World Record in 60m Hurdles
Bahamian athlete Devynne Charlton showcased her dominance in the 60-meter hurdles, equaling her own world record of 7.65 seconds. This victory marked her third consecutive World Indoor Championship title in the event, following wins in Glasgow 2024 and Nanjing 2025. She finished ahead of Nadine Visser of the Netherlands and Pia Skrzyszowska of Poland.
Walsh Continues Dominance in Shot Put
New Zealand’s Tom Walsh further cemented his legacy as the greatest male shot putter in World Indoor Championship history, winning his fourth title with a throw of 21.82 meters. This victory adds to his previous wins in 2016, 2018, and 2025, bringing his total medal count from the event to seven, with a consistent streak of success dating back to Sopot 2014.
Lutkenhaus Makes History in 800m
The championships also saw a historic performance from 17-year-old American Cooper Lutkenhaus, who became the youngest-ever winner of the 800-meter race at the World Indoor Championships, finishing in a time of 1:44.24. He was followed by Belgium’s Eliot Crestan and Spain’s Mohamed Attaouim.
Manuel’s Triumph Kicks Off Czech Success
These successes follow closely on the heels of Lurdes Gloria Manuel’s gold medal in the 400 meters on Saturday. Manuel is the reigning World Indoor Champion over 400 meters, having won the title in Toruń. In 2024, she became Czech national indoor champion over 200 metres and set a European U20 indoor record over 300 metres, and became 2024 World U20 Champion over 400 metres. Her performance signaled the start of a strong showing for Czech athletics at the championships.
The Czech team’s performance in Toruń demonstrates the growing strength of athletics in the country, with athletes like Manuel and Švábíková leading the charge on the international stage. The championships concluded on Sunday, leaving a legacy of thrilling competition and memorable performances.
What’s Next: The outdoor athletics season begins in May, with the European Athletics Championships scheduled for Rome in June. Lurdes Gloria Manuel and Michaela Švábíková are expected to be key members of the Czech team.
