Schottenheimer Leads Cowboys’ Pro Day Evaluation Tour
AUSTIN, Texas – As the NFL Draft approaches, teams are intensifying their evaluation of potential prospects. The Dallas Cowboys, under the leadership of head coach Brian Schottenheimer, recently completed a key stretch of their Pro Day tour, visiting the University of Texas in Austin on Tuesday following a stop at the University of Miami on Monday. The Cowboys, armed with two first-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, are acutely aware of the importance of making impactful selections.
Schottenheimer’s increased involvement in the draft process marks a shift in approach for his second year as head coach. He emphasized the importance of a comprehensive understanding of each prospect, going beyond simply reviewing game film. “It’s just about getting to know all the prospects… From Stephen and Jerry [Jones], to Will McClay, Mitch LaPoint, Ross [Wuensche], Chris Vaughn, they’ve done a great job putting the list together, and now I’m reviewing all the positions,” Schottenheimer explained.
The Cowboys’ strategy isn’t solely focused on filling immediate needs. Schottenheimer indicated a willingness to select the best player available, regardless of position, if a standout talent is within reach. “You want to be prepared to do what we need on defense, but we definitely aren’t going to pass up a great offensive player if they’re available in one of those spots,” he said. This approach represents a deeper dive into player evaluation than in his first year. “Last year was more like, yeah, I saw the cut-ups, the flash points, but now I’ve seen the full game video. I’ve seen these guys compete. That makes it a little easier to help make that decision.”
The Cowboys’ front office believes a strong foundation has already been laid through free agency. Schottenheimer lauded the team’s work in retaining key players and adding fresh talent. “I reckon it starts with the players we were able to keep first and foremost… I’m always going to start with George and Javonte, players like them that we got back on the offensive side of the ball,” Schottenheimer stated. He specifically highlighted the acquisitions of Rashan Gary, Jalen Thompson, and Cobie Durant as significant additions, praising their proven abilities and potential impact.
These moves have positioned the Cowboys to approach the draft with flexibility, allowing them to “draft natural and pure,” as Schottenheimer put it. He explained the importance of avoiding forced selections driven by desperation. “I think we did a very good job preparing ourselves to be able to draft naturally and purely, which is what you want to do. You don’t want to be forced to pick a player quickly, due to the fact that that’s when you make mistakes.”
However, Schottenheimer acknowledged that certain positions still require attention. “We’ve added some good pieces, we have good depth,” he said. “Notice still some positions we need to address, that’s part of the process. As I always say, it’s not my phrase, I think it’s from Stephen or Jerry, but player acquisition is 24/7, 365 days a year and never stops. We never stop looking, we’re always open to making moves.”
Accompanying Schottenheimer on the Pro Day circuit was the Cowboys’ new defensive coordinator, Christian Parker. The two coaches have developed a strong working relationship and share a similar vision for their respective sides of the ball. “I think he knows exactly what he’s looking for,” Schottenheimer said of Parker. “That’s very evident from the time we sat down in the interview process; he knows exactly what he wants at each position. It’s not a league of cookie cutters, you’re going to have players with long arms, short arms, things like that. The vision is very clear, and I love that. The way he sees football and the way I see football is very similar.”
The Pro Day tour isn’t just about evaluating on-field skills. Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of getting to know the players as individuals. “I think it all starts with getting to know the young man,” he said. “We try to get there early and accept them to dinner, have the opportunity to see them in a different environment than the facilities where they’re talking about football and doing football things they love. That’s really important to us.” He looks for qualities like competitiveness, coachability, and a positive attitude. “Knowing the person, what motivates them, what’s important to them. And then, obviously, in this type of environment, you want to see them compete. Are they at the front of the line? Are they listening? What are they doing? It’s not so much about the movement and things like that, we’ve seen a lot of video; it’s more if they follow instructions, if they’re at the front, if they compete, if they have energy and attitude. Those are the things that stand out at Pro Days.”
The stop in Austin held particular significance, given the relationship between Schottenheimer and University of Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian. Both coaches are known for their offensive philosophies, and they spent considerable time discussing prospects during the Pro Day event. “Here’s a very important stop for us here in Texas,” Schottenheimer said. “A place close by with Coach Sark, there’s a great relationship between him, the Cowboys and the University of Texas, so we’re excited to be here.”
The Cowboys’ evaluation process continues as they prepare for the 2026 NFL Draft. The team will host a series of top-30 visits at The Star in Frisco, beginning this weekend, with prospects like Texas Tech’s Romello Height and LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane expected to attend. Yahoo Sports reported that the Cowboys had dinner with several Texas Tech prospects, including linebacker Jacob Rodriguez and defensive tackle Lee Hunter, before their Pro Day event.
The Cowboys’ meticulous approach to the draft, combined with their successful free agency period, suggests they are well-positioned to address their needs and compete for a championship in the upcoming season. The next key date for fans to watch is the start of the 2026 NFL Draft, scheduled for April 29th.
