Guatemala City, Guatemala – Costa Rica is sending a strong contingent to the 37th Pan American Racquetball Championships, taking place in Guatemala City from March 27th to April 4th. The tournament brings together the top racquetball players from across the Americas and Costa Rica aims to make a significant impact.
The Costa Rican team is spearheaded by Andrés Acuña, the nation’s top-ranked male player. Acuña recently achieved a major milestone, winning the world championship in 2025 and consistently ranking among the top players on the professional tour. He will be a key figure for Costa Rica’s medal hopes.
On the women’s side, Maricruz Ortiz returns to the national team as the number one ranked player. Ortiz, a former world junior champion, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the competition. She expressed her excitement about rejoining the team and partnering with Larissa Faeth in doubles.
Adding depth to the team are Felipe Camacho, a seasoned athlete and the second-ranked male player, and Larissa Faeth, a rising star who claimed world junior titles in both singles (Under-14) and doubles (Under-16) in the Dominican Republic last year. Faeth’s emergence signals a bright future for Costa Rican racquetball.
The doubles teams will also feature experienced pairings. Felipe Segreda will team up with Acuña in men’s doubles, whereas Faeth and Ortiz will compete in the women’s doubles event. Segreda, returning to the national team after a hiatus since 2021, emphasized his improved maturity and the benefits of training alongside Acuña. “I’m coming back more mature and training alongside Andrés Acuña. I’ve learned a lot and we hope to deliver results for the country and surpass the team’s performance in 2025,” he said.
Beyond the core players, the Costa Rican delegation includes Arturo Chavarría, Jimena Rodríguez, and Álvaro Guillén, who will participate in a concurrent junior tournament held alongside the Pan American Championships. This provides valuable experience for the next generation of Costa Rican racquetball players.
Costa Rica has a history of success at the Pan American Championships, securing four bronze medals at the 2025 event: in women’s doubles, men’s doubles, men’s team, and mixed team competitions. The team will be looking to build on that performance in Guatemala City.
Acuña’s impressive resume includes a gold medal at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, and a Pan American Championship title in Men’s Doubles (with Gabriel Garcia) in 2024 in Guatemala City. He was also the runner-up at the 2021 International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Championships in Men’s Singles, also held in Guatemala. His career trajectory demonstrates a consistent rise to the top of the sport.
The Pan American Racquetball Championships represent a crucial opportunity for Costa Rica to showcase its talent on the continental stage. With a blend of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, the team is well-positioned to compete for medals and further elevate the profile of racquetball in the country. The tournament is expected to draw significant attention from racquetball fans across the Americas.
The competition in Guatemala City will be fierce, with athletes from across the continent vying for top honors. Costa Rica’s team, however, appears confident and prepared to meet the challenge. Fans can follow the team’s progress throughout the tournament, which runs from March 27th to April 4th.
