Ciputra Hanoi International Badminton 2026: Hai Dang, Tien Minh & Defending Champions Compete

Hanoi, Vietnam – The Ciputra Hanoi – Yonex Sunrise Vietnam International Challenge 2026 badminton tournament, set to take place from March 22nd to 29th, will showcase a strong contingent of Vietnamese players, including Hai Dang, Tien Minh, and Duc Phat, competing against athletes from 21 countries and regions around the world. This year’s tournament holds added significance as it coincides with the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s Traditional Day of Sports and Physical Training (March 27th, 1946 – March 27th, 2026).

The tournament, organized jointly by the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports and the Hanoi Badminton Federation, with professional sponsorship from the Vietnam Badminton Federation, has attracted a total of 329 athletes – 140 women and 189 men – demonstrating its growing appeal within the international badminton community. More than 800 athletes initially registered for the event, according to Pham Xuan Tai, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, highlighting the competition’s draw, enhanced by its location in Hanoi, Vietnam’s thousand-year-old capital city.

A final list of over 300 participating athletes was compiled based on the rankings of those meeting the criteria for a Challenge-level competition. Among them are 14 Vietnamese players poised to compete across five disciplines: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

In the men’s draw, veteran Nguyen Tien Minh, a familiar face in Vietnamese badminton, will be joined by Olympic participant Le Duc Phat (from the 2024 Games) and Nguyen Hai Dang, currently the highest-ranked Vietnamese badminton player globally. The spotlight will also be on Nguyen Dinh Hoang and Tran Dinh Manh, who will be looking to defend their historic gold medal in men’s doubles, a title they secured at the 2025 Ciputra Hanoi – Vietnam International Challenge.

Last year’s victory for Hoang and Manh was a landmark achievement for Vietnamese badminton. They defeated a Japanese pair 2-1 in the final, securing Vietnam’s sole gold medal at the tournament and marking the first time a Vietnamese men’s doubles team had won an International Challenge title sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). The win was particularly special as it came on home soil in Hanoi.

While Nguyen Thuy Linh, Vietnam’s top-ranked women’s singles player, is currently competing in a tournament in France, the women’s draw will still feature experienced players like Vu Thi Trang, and the women’s doubles pairing of Pham Thi Khanh and Pham Thi Dieu Ly, both of whom are steadily climbing the world rankings and approaching the top 100.

The qualifying rounds for the tournament are scheduled to begin on March 24th, with the finals and closing ceremony taking place on March 29th at the Xuan Dinh Ward Gymnasium (formerly the Tay Ho Gymnasium). Fans can expect a week of intense competition as these athletes vie for glory on the international stage.

The Ciputra Hanoi – Yonex Sunrise Vietnam International Challenge isn’t just a sporting event; it’s a celebration of Vietnamese athleticism and a testament to the country’s growing presence in the world of badminton. The tournament provides a crucial platform for Vietnamese players to test their skills against international competition and gain valuable experience. For veterans like Nguyen Tien Minh, it’s a chance to showcase their enduring talent, while for rising stars like Nguyen Hai Dang, it’s an opportunity to further establish themselves on the global stage.

The success of Tran Dinh Manh and Nguyen Dinh Hoang last year has undoubtedly raised the profile of Vietnamese badminton and inspired a fresh generation of players. Their victory demonstrated that Vietnamese athletes can compete with the best in the world, and it has created a sense of optimism and excitement within the badminton community. The pressure will be on the defending champions to replicate their success this year, but they will undoubtedly be motivated by the support of the home crowd and the opportunity to make history once again.

The tournament’s location in Hanoi adds another layer of significance. Hanoi, with its rich history and vibrant culture, provides a unique and welcoming atmosphere for athletes and spectators alike. The city’s passion for sports is evident, and the local community is eager to support its national team. The Xuan Dinh Ward Gymnasium is expected to be packed with fans throughout the week, creating an electric atmosphere that will undoubtedly inspire the players to perform at their best.

As the tournament approaches, anticipation is building among badminton enthusiasts in Vietnam and around the world. The Ciputra Hanoi – Yonex Sunrise Vietnam International Challenge 2026 promises to be a thrilling event, showcasing the skill, athleticism, and determination of some of the world’s top badminton players. The competition is expected to be fierce, and the outcome remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Vietnamese badminton is on the rise, and this tournament is a key moment in its continued development.

Following the conclusion of the tournament on March 29th, fans can expect further updates on the performances of Vietnamese athletes at other international competitions throughout the year. The Vietnam Badminton Federation will continue to support its players as they strive for success on the global stage.
