Cheah Liek Hou Defends Spanish Para Badminton Titles Despite Illness | SU5 Champion

Sick but unstoppable – Liek Hou triumphs in Spain despite illness

TOLEDO, Spain – Cheah Liek Hou demonstrated remarkable resilience this past weekend, successfully defending his title at the Spanish Para Badminton International in Toledo despite battling illness in the weeks leading up to the competition. The 37-year-old Malaysian para shuttler secured both the men’s SU5 (upper body impairment) singles and doubles crowns, showcasing a determination that extends far beyond the court.

Overcoming Adversity in Toledo

Liek Hou’s victory wasn’t simply about retaining a title; it was a testament to his unwavering spirit. He defeated Taiwan’s Fang Jen-yu 21-19, 21-16 in a compelling singles final on Sunday, adding another chapter to his already impressive career. He then teamed up with Brazil’s Yuki Rodrigues to claim the doubles title, overcoming Jen-yu and Gui Yu-pu with a score of 21-11, 21-15. This marks Liek Hou’s first tournament win with Rodrigues, a partnership born out of necessity following a change in eligibility rules.

The triumph is particularly noteworthy given Liek Hou’s recent health struggles. He revealed he was significantly unwell just over a week before the tournament began, experiencing a bad cough and sore throat. While thankfully not influenza, the illness disrupted his training schedule and left him feeling far from his best.

A Limited Preparation, a Stunning Result

“My condition before the tournament wasn’t good at all,” Liek Hou explained. “A little over a week ago I was really sick with a bad cough and a sore throat. Thankfully, it wasn’t influenza. Although, it took some time for me to recover.” The limited preparation meant Liek Hou felt he was operating at roughly 60 percent of his usual capacity, but he was still able to find a way to win.

“I didn’t train for a few days and only had a short period to prepare for Spain,” he said. “But I’m glad I was able to stay in control during matches and defend both my titles.” This ability to perform under pressure, even when physically compromised, underscores Liek Hou’s mental fortitude and experience.

A Modern Partnership in Doubles

The doubles victory was especially significant as it marked Liek Hou’s debut with Yuki Rodrigues. The pairing came about after his previous doubles partner, Mohd Fareez Anuar, was deemed ineligible due to changes in the SU5 classification rules. The transition from rivals to teammates proved seamless, with the duo displaying impressive synergy on the court.

Liek Hou spoke highly of his new partner, acknowledging Rodrigues’ potential. “He (Rodrigues) is still highly young with a long way to move. I do wish him very best in his career,” Liek Hou added. “I hope he uses this win to push himself further and chase after bigger targets.” This mentorship highlights Liek Hou’s commitment to not only his own success but likewise the development of the sport and its athletes.

Looking Ahead to the Asian Para Games

With April and May free from competition, Liek Hou will now focus on regaining his full fitness and preparing for the Asian Para Games, scheduled to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from October 18-24. The Spanish International served as valuable preparation, but Liek Hou is aiming to be in peak condition for the Games. As reported by the New Straits Times, this tournament was a crucial step in his journey towards that goal.

The Asian Para Games represent a significant opportunity for Liek Hou to add to his already impressive collection of accolades, including nine World Championships singles titles. His performance in Spain demonstrates that even when facing adversity, he remains a force to be reckoned with in para badminton.

For fans following Liek Hou’s career, the upcoming months promise further exciting developments as he prepares for the challenges ahead. His dedication and resilience continue to inspire, solidifying his position as a leading figure in the world of para badminton.

Next up for Liek Hou is focused training as he prepares for the Asian Para Games in Japan this October. Stay tuned to Archysport for further updates on his progress.
