Prague commuters and visitors attending the upcoming World Figure Skating Championships are set to benefit from the reopening of the Českomoravská metro station on Friday, March 20, 2026. The station, a key access point for the O2 arena, has been undergoing extensive renovations for over a year.
The modernization project, which began after 26 years of operation, addressed critical infrastructure issues including water leaks, aging escalators, and outdated station finishes. According to a statement released by the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) on March 16, 2026, the station’s updated design will be ready for passengers in time for the figure skating championships, which begin on March 24th.
“We anticipate opening the Českomoravská metro station on Friday, March 20, 2026, provided all tests, inspections, and discussions with authorities regarding the commissioning of the construction are completed without complications,” the DPP stated. Current work focuses on final touches, stress tests, and acceptance of technological equipment.
The reopening of Českomoravská is particularly timely, as the O2 arena will host the ISU World Figure Skating Championships from March 24th to March 29th, drawing a significant influx of spectators. The renovated station will ease transportation for attendees and local residents alike.
The station’s redesign, the result of a winning proposal by the team of Maxim Velčovský and edit! architects, includes new escalators and updated wall coverings. Plans for a future elevator installation are also in place, though construction is not expected to significantly disrupt service.
However, the improvements aren’t coming at the expense of other necessary infrastructure work. The planned reconstruction of the Hradčanská station on Line A has been postponed until the end of 2026. This decision, also announced by the DPP on March 16th, is intended to avoid concurrent disruptions with the ongoing repairs at the Flora station, also on Line A. The DPP is prioritizing minimizing inconvenience for passengers by staggering these major projects.
