Celta Vigo Unveils Flag-Inspired Kit Ahead of Alavés Clash
Vigo is buzzing with excitement following Celta Vigo’s historic triumph over Olympique Lyonnais in the UEFA Europa League. The victory on March 19, 2026, marked the first time the club has eliminated a French team in continental competition, overcoming past defeats against Lens, and Marseille. The win has ignited a wave of celebration coinciding with the city’s preparations for the annual “Reconquista” festivities.
This Sunday, March 28th, marks the 218th anniversary of the expulsion of Napoleonic troops from Vigo. That victory was the first of its kind on the European continent and spurred the transformation of a minor fishing village into the largest city in Galicia. To commemorate both events, Celta Vigo has released a special edition kit, a reimagining of the city’s flag.
Last year, the club launched a limited-edition kit designed by Oliveira dos 100 anos, initially capped at 1809 units, which quickly sold out and became the club’s best-selling jersey ever. This year’s design, created in collaboration with Hummel, is equally anticipated, offering a bold and striking tribute to local identity.
The new jersey will be available for purchase this Friday at 10:00 hours CET on the Celta Vigo website, priced at 95 euros. The club initially promoted the kit on social media shortly after the win in Lyon with the message: “Porta Gamboa, derrubada. SIGAMOS A CONQUISTA!” (“Carry Gamboa, overthrown. LET’S CONTINUE THE CONQUEST!”), echoing a previous banner displayed by supporters.
Celta Vigo will debut the new kit this weekend in their La Liga match against Alavés on Sunday at 16:15 CET. The club also plans to wear the kit during the “retro” round of La Liga, specifically in their match against Real Oviedo at Balaídos.
This isn’t the first time Celta has incorporated the city’s flag into their kit design, though previous iterations were more recent. Earlier versions featured the flag with Umbro and Citroën between 2001 and 2004, and a reimagining by Adidas and Estrella Galicia in the 2021/22 season.
Even though, the current marketing team opted for a more faithful recreation of the original design. The kit features the white and red rhombus pattern of the provincial maritime flag, replicated on the collar and shoulders. Sponsor logos are integrated in white to maintain a clean aesthetic.
The initiative, however, is not officially part of La Liga’s upcoming “Retro Day,” scheduled for April 10-13, where 38 clubs will wear kits inspired by their history. The designs were showcased at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Madrid, but Celta did not have a representative present to display their new jersey.
Celta Vigo’s victory over Lyon in the Europa League, securing a 2-0 win (3-1 on aggregate), has undoubtedly fueled the excitement surrounding the new kit. The team’s performance, coupled with the symbolic significance of the jersey, represents a moment of pride for the club and the city of Vigo.
The release of this kit is more than just a merchandise launch; it’s a celebration of local heritage and a symbol of Celta Vigo’s continued success. Fans eager to show their support can purchase the jersey online this Friday, and look forward to seeing it worn on the pitch this weekend.
Next up for Celta Vigo is their La Liga match against Alavés on Sunday, March 22nd, at Balaídos. Fans can follow the match and further updates on the club’s official website and social media channels.
