Madrid – Carolina Marín, one of Spain’s most decorated athletes, has announced her retirement from professional badminton. The Olympic champion and three-time world titleholder revealed her decision this week, bringing an end to a remarkable career marked by both triumph and adversity. The news, first shared in an emotional video, confirms speculation that began following an appearance at an event celebrating two decades of Sanitas’ support for Spanish sport.
Marín’s journey to the pinnacle of badminton has been nothing short of inspirational. Rising to prominence as the first European to reach the world No. 1 ranking, she captivated fans with her aggressive playing style and unwavering determination. Her gold medal victory at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics cemented her status as a national hero, and she followed that success with multiple European Championships and World Championship titles.
However, Marín’s career has as well been punctuated by significant setbacks. A devastating knee injury sustained during the semifinal match against He Bing Jiao at the Paris 2024 Olympics threatened to derail her ambitions. She re-injured the same knee, tearing her external meniscus and ACL for a second time. Despite undergoing further surgery, the physical toll proved insurmountable. “I took a wonderful decision a month and a half ago when I decided to have surgery again,” Marín explained. “I had a very sharp pain that almost didn’t let me walk or have a normal life. Now I am very happy because I don’t limp. I have no pain. For me, the priority is to have life, to have health. This operation has even changed my mood.”
The decision to retire wasn’t taken lightly. Marín had hoped to compete at the European Championships in Huelva, Spain – a homecoming she envisioned as the perfect farewell. She decided against risking further injury. “I wanted to say goodbye on a court, but I don’t wish to put my body at risk for it,” she stated. “I would have liked my end as a player to have been different… I retired on a court, in Paris, in 2024, but we didn’t grasp it then.”
Marín’s impact extends beyond her on-court achievements. She has been a vocal advocate for the sport of badminton in Spain, inspiring a new generation of players. Her resilience in the face of adversity, particularly following her injury in Paris, resonated deeply with fans and earned her widespread admiration. The support she received from her compatriots following that injury was something she openly acknowledged and appreciated.
At the recent event commemorating Sanitas’ 20 years of partnership with the Spanish Olympic and Paralympic Committees (COE), Marín shared experiences with fellow Spanish sporting legends, including paralympic swimmer Teresa Perales (28 medals), canoeist Saúl Craviotto (six medals), and race walker María Pérez (gold in Paris). It was at this event, seemingly without revealing her intentions, that she hinted at the positive progress she was making with her recovery.
“I wanted my path to end in Huelva, and it will,” Marín said. “That girl who discovered badminton and wanted to win everything is happy today and returns home. I close the circle. I leave my passion proud of having achieved badminton being recognized and practiced in my country.”
The Princess of Asturias Award winner leaves behind a legacy of excellence and determination. While her competitive career may be over, her influence on Spanish sport will undoubtedly endure. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of prioritizing health and well-being. Marín’s decision to step away from the sport allows her to focus on a future free from pain, a future she embraces with optimism and gratitude.
Marín will attend the European Championships in Huelva as a spectator, allowing her to bid farewell to her fans in her hometown. The event, scheduled from April 6th to 12th, will provide a fitting opportunity for the Spanish public to celebrate the career of a true sporting icon.
What’s Next: Carolina Marín will be present at the European Championships in Huelva as a spectator, offering support and celebrating the sport she loves. Further details regarding her future endeavors are expected to be announced in the coming months.
