Kevin Byard Signs with New England Patriots, Bolstering Secondary
Foxborough, Massachusetts – Veteran safety Kevin Byard has agreed to a one-year deal with the New England Patriots, NFL Network reported Wednesday. The contract is worth $9 million, bringing a proven ball-hawker to a Patriots defense looking to solidify its secondary. This move reunites Byard with head coach Mike Vrabel, their successful partnership previously flourishing with the Tennessee Titans.
The 32-year-classic Byard arrives in New England after a productive, albeit nomadic, stretch following his time in Tennessee. Traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in October 2023, he then signed with the Chicago Bears in 2024, playing two seasons with the team before becoming a free agent this offseason. Byard’s consistent performance and knack for creating turnovers made him a highly sought-after commodity in free agency.
A Familiar Reunion with Vrabel
The connection with Vrabel appears to have been a significant factor in Byard’s decision. Vrabel coached Byard in Tennessee from 2018 to 2023, a period during which Byard established himself as one of the league’s premier safeties. Under Vrabel’s guidance, Byard recorded 19 interceptions, 43 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and 481 tackles. The familiarity and established rapport likely played a key role in attracting Byard to New England.
2025 Interception Leader Adds Experience to Patriots Defense
Byard’s most recent success came with the Chicago Bears, where he led the NFL with seven interceptions in 2025. This marked the second time in his career he’s topped the league in interceptions, having also led the NFL with eight picks in 2017. His ability to consistently generate turnovers is a valuable asset for any defense, and the Patriots are hoping he can replicate that success in New England. He also contributed 93 tackles, eight passes defensed, and four tackles for loss during the 2025 season with the Bears.
Despite his age, Byard has demonstrated remarkable durability and consistency. He has played nearly 100% of defensive snaps (1,070) in recent seasons and has not missed a game since entering the NFL as a third-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2016. His streak of 164 consecutive regular-season appearances, plus 10 playoff games, speaks to his reliability and commitment.

Throughout his career, Byard has consistently ranked among the league’s top safeties. He’s a three-time All-Pro (2017, 2021, 2025) and a three-time Pro Bowler (2017, 2021, 2025). With 36 career interceptions, he currently ranks second among active players, trailing only Harrison Smith of the Minnesota Vikings (39). His consistent ability to read quarterbacks and anticipate throws has made him a perennial threat in the passing game.
Byard’s arrival is expected to complement standout rookie Craig Woodson in the Patriots’ secondary. The combination of Byard’s experience and Woodson’s potential could form a formidable duo, bolstering the Patriots’ defensive backfield.
