Gävle, Sweden – Brynäs IF faces an uphill battle in their best-of-seven Swedish Hockey League (SHL) quarterfinal series against Växjö Lakers after a 6-4 loss on Thursday night, coupled with a late-game match penalty assessed to forward Oskar Lindblom. The incident, a slewfoot on Växjö defenseman Brian Cooper, has added fuel to a series already brimming with intensity.
Växjö now leads the series 2-0, having dominated the first game in Småland with a 6-2 victory. Although Brynäs showed early promise in Game 2, jumping out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Axel Jonsson Fjällby and Anton Rödin, Växjö responded with a relentless offensive push, ultimately securing the win.
The game saw several momentum swings. After Brynäs’s initial lead, Felix Robert scored for Växjö late in the first period. The second period was a back-and-forth affair, with Manuel Ågren tying the game just 25 seconds into the period, followed by Leo Sahlin Wallenius giving Växjö the lead. Brynäs managed to equalize at 3-3 when Oskar Lindblom’s shot, initially appearing to be blocked, was confirmed to have crossed the goal line after video review.
However, any hopes of a Brynäs comeback were quickly dashed in the third period. Dennis Rasmussen scored just 37 seconds into the frame, and Kalle Kratz extended Växjö’s lead to 5-3 just two minutes later, prompting a timeout from Brynäs head coach Niklas Gällstedt. Jakob Silfverberg did manage to pull one back for Brynäs on the power play, but Manuel Ågren sealed the victory with an empty-net goal.
The final score of 6-4 reflects a game where Växjö consistently capitalized on opportunities, while Brynäs struggled to maintain their early momentum. The series now shifts back to Gävle for Games 3 and 4, where Brynäs will need to deliver two strong performances to avoid elimination.
Lindblom’s Match Penalty
The most controversial moment of the game occurred with just 40 seconds remaining. Lindblom received a match penalty for a slewfoot on Brian Cooper, sending the Växjö defenseman crashing to the ice. Cooper remained down for a moment before getting to his feet, visibly angered by the play. He responded by throwing his helmet in frustration and confronting Lindblom before leaving the ice.
“Brian Cooper is furious, he is enraged!” exclaimed TV4 commentator Åke Unger, highlighting the intensity of the reaction. The penalty will undoubtedly be a talking point heading into the next games, and could potentially lead to further disciplinary action.
Lindblom himself downplayed his role in the incident, telling SVT Sport he felt he received an elbow and lost his balance. “I think I acquire an elbow and lose my balance,” Lindblom said. He also noted he hadn’t seen replays of either his play or an earlier cross-checking incident involving Cooper.
Brynäs Faces Uphill Battle
Brynäs defenseman Johannes Kinnvall acknowledged the team’s frustration but emphasized the need to focus on the positives. “We can’t focus on the bad, because then we won’t turn anything around,” Kinnvall told TV4. “It’s frustrating. I think we create a lot but let in four identical goals. We score four goals on the road, and somehow that should be enough for a win, but it isn’t today.”
Kinnvall stressed the importance of taking things “one shift at a time, one game at a time,” and focusing on incremental improvements. The team will need to address their defensive vulnerabilities and identify a way to consistently generate offense if they hope to mount a comeback in the series.
The loss leaves Brynäs in a precarious position. Trailing 2-0 in the series, they must win both games on home ice to maintain their playoff hopes alive. The pressure is now firmly on the Gävle-based team to deliver a response in front of their home fans.
