Brentford FC Launches ‘Queen Bees’ Supporters Group for Women and Girls
Brentford, England – Brentford Football Club is bolstering its commitment to inclusivity with the launch of “Queen Bees,” a new supporters group dedicated to fostering a more accessible and welcoming environment for women and girls within the club’s fanbase. The initiative, spearheaded by a group of passionate Brentford supporters, aims to create a community where female fans can connect, share their love for the Bees, and advocate for greater representation within football culture.
The creation of the Queen Bees comes at a time of growing momentum for women’s football and increasing efforts to break down barriers within the sport. Although attendance at Women’s Super League matches continues to climb, and the Lionesses’ success at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 sparked a surge in interest, challenges remain in ensuring that football is truly inclusive for all. The Queen Bees seek to address these challenges head-on, providing a dedicated space for women and girls to enjoy the game without fear of intimidation or exclusion.
A Fan-Led Initiative
The supporter group was founded by Alison Mullaley, Abi Hadjigeorgiou, Debbie Pennington, and Sara Loewenthal – all long-time Brentford fans. Debbie Pennington, who began supporting the club in 2001 after moving to the area, explained that the idea for the Queen Bees stemmed from a desire to connect with other female fans after the return of supporters to stadiums following the COVID-19 pandemic. “I would see friends at games but didn’t have a chance to connect with them,” Pennington said. “This became a motivating factor in creating Queen Bees.”
Pennington highlighted the importance of creating a safe and welcoming space, recalling her early experiences at Griffin Park, Brentford’s former stadium. “I loved Griffin Park – I felt safe taking young children and loved cheering the boys,” she said. The Queen Bees aim to replicate that feeling of inclusivity at the Gtech Community Stadium and beyond.
More Than Just Matchdays
The Queen Bees’ ambitions extend beyond simply attending matches together. The group plans to host regular meet-ups for home games, organize travel to away fixtures, and actively fundraise for women and girls’ charities. They also envision creating a network of “seat buddies” to help new fans feel comfortable and connected at games. “2026 is all about the Queen Bees, raising the profile of women in football, letting everyone have access, creating seat buddies and organising pre-match meet-ups,” Pennington stated. “Just getting an opportunity to be with the same people helps build the relationship.”
The group is also keen to emphasize that the Queen Bees are open to male allies. Recognizing that creating a truly inclusive environment requires the support of everyone, they welcome men who share their vision of a more equitable and welcoming football culture.
