BNK 썸 Faces Playoff Uncertainty After KB Stars Claim League Title
Busan, South Korea – The hopes of a “spring basketball” run for the Busan BNK 썸 are hanging by a thread after a decisive 94-69 loss to the 청주 KB Stars on Tuesday, March 30th. The defeat, coupled with the KB Stars’ securing of the regular season championship, leaves BNK’s playoff fate in the hands of the Asan Woori Bank’s final game result.
The game, played at the Busan Sajik Indoor Gymnasium, saw the KB Stars dominate from the outset, ultimately securing their sixth regular season title and a 21-9 record, narrowly edging out the Bucheon Hana Bank (20-9). The loss concludes BNK’s regular season with a 13-17 record, leaving their postseason aspirations precarious.
KB Stars’ Dominance on Display
From the opening quarter, BNK struggled to contain the KB Stars’ outside shooting. KB connected on four three-pointers in the first quarter alone, building a commanding 26-14 lead. While BNK attempted to mount a comeback in the second quarter, utilizing aggressive pressure to close the gap to 32-30, they couldn’t overcome the strong performance of KB’s core trio.
Park Ji-soo, Kang I-seul and Heo Ye-eun proved to be too much for BNK to handle. Park Ji-soo recorded a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds, leading all scorers. Kang I-seul added 18 points, while Heo Ye-eun contributed 14. For BNK, Kim So-nia (20 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists) and Lee So-hee (10 points, 5 assists) put forth solid efforts, but the team’s longstanding height disadvantage proved insurmountable.
Playoff Hopes Hang in the Balance
BNK head coach Park Jung-eun acknowledged the team’s struggles in the paint after the game. “As of the height difference, we allowed too many easy baskets in the paint. That led to a feeling like we were losing momentum,” she said.
Now, BNK’s playoff hopes rest on the outcome of the upcoming Woori Bank versus Samsung Life game on April 3rd. A win for Woori Bank would secure the fourth playoff spot and eliminate BNK. However, a victory for Samsung Life would open the door for BNK to continue their season. The margin between the two teams is just 0.5 games, making the upcoming contest crucial.
KCC’s Playoff Push Also Uncertain
The uncertainty extends to the men’s league as well, with the Busan KCC also facing an uphill battle for a playoff berth. Currently holding the sixth seed with a 26-25 record, KCC leads the seventh-placed Suwon KT (25-26) by a single game. However, they trail the fifth-ranked Goyang Sono (27-24) by one game, creating a tight three-team race for the final playoff spots.
KCC’s remaining schedule is challenging, featuring matchups against the Seoul SK (April 1st), Changwon LG (April 5th), and Wonju DB (April 8th). The team’s head-to-head record against these opponents is unfavorable, having lost two of three games against SK and all three games against LG. Their record against DB stands at one win and two losses. A minimum of two wins will be necessary for KCC to secure a playoff position.
Meanwhile, KT faces a slightly less daunting path, with games against LG, Ulsan Hyundai Mobis, and Goyang Sono.
Looking Ahead
The coming days will be critical for both the BNK 썸 and the Busan KCC. Fans will be closely watching the results of the remaining games, hoping for favorable outcomes that will extend their teams’ seasons. The Woori Bank-Samsung Life game on April 3rd will be particularly significant for BNK, determining whether their “spring basketball” dreams will become a reality or end prematurely. For KCC, navigating a difficult schedule and securing key wins will be paramount to maintaining their playoff position.
The Korean basketball league continues to deliver excitement and drama as the regular season concludes and the playoffs loom. Stay tuned for further updates as these teams battle for a chance to compete for a championship.
