Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Expressway: Locals Exercise & Play Before March 2026 Opening

The 37-kilometer stretch of the Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Expressway, connecting Ho Chi Minh City to the coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, is nearing completion and is slated to open before March 31, 2026, according to the Ministry of Construction. But before the official opening, residents are taking advantage of the smooth, newly-laid asphalt, transforming the unfinished highway into a temporary recreational space.

As the expressway passes through several residential areas, locals have begun using the roadway for exercise and leisure activities. Reports indicate that people are walking, jogging, cycling, playing football, flying kites and even riding motorcycles on the still-unopened highway. The lack of traffic, for now, provides a unique opportunity for community enjoyment.

The Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Expressway is a significant infrastructure project for the region, aiming to improve connectivity between Ho Chi Minh City and the critical port city of Vung Tau. The 54-kilometer highway traverses both Dong Nai province (34.2 km) and Ho Chi Minh City (19.8 km). Construction began in June 2023, and the project is divided into three components.

Component 3, located within Ho Chi Minh City, has already been completed. Component 2 is in its final stages of construction, while Component 1 is progressing at a slower pace, with completion expected in the second quarter of 2026. The Ministry of Construction has urged Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai province, along with relevant departments, to expedite the final stages of construction to meet the March 31st deadline.

The unusual scene of residents utilizing the expressway before its official opening highlights the anticipation surrounding the project. For many, it’s a rare opportunity to experience the roadway in a peaceful setting, free from the expected traffic congestion. The smooth surface is proving popular with cyclists and runners, while families are enjoying the open space for games and recreation.

The Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Ho Chi Minh City and the Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, a key economic zone and popular tourist destination. The project is a crucial component of Vietnam’s broader infrastructure development plans, aimed at boosting economic growth and improving regional connectivity. The expressway is categorized as a Category A highway, indicating a high standard of construction and design.

As the March 31st deadline approaches, construction crews are working diligently to finalize the remaining tasks. Once opened, the expressway will undoubtedly become a vital transportation artery for the region, facilitating trade, tourism, and economic development. For now, however, it’s providing a unique and unexpected recreational space for the local community.

The next major milestone for the Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Expressway is the official opening ceremony, currently scheduled before the finish of March 2026. We’ll continue to monitor the project’s progress and provide updates as they become available. What are your thoughts on this unique situation? Share your comments below.
