MUNICH – Bayern Munich’s dominant 6-1 Champions League victory over Atalanta Bergamo on Tuesday night was tempered by concerning injuries to three key players, including goalkeeper Jonas Urbig. The 22-year-old, filling in for the injured Manuel Neuer, sustained a head injury during stoppage time and was immediately taken to a hospital for evaluation. This situation creates a potential goalkeeper emergency for the Bundesliga giants.
The incident occurred when Urbig collided with Atalanta striker Nikola Krstovic whereas attempting to clear a late attack, just before Mario Pasalic scored the rebound. Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen confirmed after the match that Urbig was transported to a hospital for imaging to rule out any serious damage. “Jonas Urbig is currently in the hospital, imaging is being done,” Dreesen stated. “There is a suspicion of a concussion. The imaging is a precaution to rule out anything worse.”
Sport1 reported that Urbig was experiencing visual disturbances following the collision. Sporting director Max Eberl added that Urbig was “a bit dazed” and suffering from a severe headache. The injury casts doubt on his availability for Bayern’s crucial upcoming Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen.
This isn’t the only injury concern for Bayern. Alphonso Davies was substituted off in tears earlier in the game, reportedly with a muscle injury, and Jamal Musiala appeared to pick up an ankle issue late in the second half. Eberl provided a brief update on both players, suggesting Davies’ injury is muscular, Musiala’s was precautionary, and Urbig’s is the most concerning. “Phonzie probably has a muscle injury. Jonas was hit on the head. He’s a bit dazed and now has a huge headache, of course. I can’t say for sure what happened yet. In Jamal’s case, it was more of a precautionary measure. He felt something in his ankle, but nothing serious. That seems to be the least serious of the three. We’ll have to wait and see with the other two,” Eberl said.
Captain Joshua Kimmich expressed concern over the injuries, recalling similar issues that plagued the team last season. “We hope that Alphonso and Jamal’s injuries aren’t too serious,” Kimmich said on Amazon Prime Video. “That cost us a lot last season. People can’t let that happen again this season.”
The injury to Urbig is particularly problematic given Manuel Neuer’s continued absence with a calf muscle tear. Neuer’s recovery timeline remains uncertain, leaving Bayern with limited experienced goalkeeping options. The club will likely turn to veteran Tom Strakosha as a short-term solution, but the situation underscores the importance of having depth at the position.
According to Goal.com, Bayern are currently expecting Urbig to be sidelined for eight to ten days, potentially ruling him out of both the Bundesliga clash with Leverkusen and the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie against Atalanta. The exact duration of his absence will depend on the results of further evaluations and his recovery progress.
The club is understandably cautious, prioritizing Urbig’s health and well-being. A concussion requires careful management to prevent long-term complications. Bayern’s medical staff will closely monitor his condition and ensure he returns to action only when fully cleared.
This series of injuries comes at a critical juncture in Bayern’s season. They are competing on multiple fronts, including the Bundesliga title race and the Champions League knockout stages. Maintaining a healthy squad will be crucial to their success. The team will necessitate to rely on the depth of their roster and the resilience of their players to navigate this challenging period.
Bayern fans will be anxiously awaiting updates on the condition of all three injured players. The club is expected to provide further information in the coming days. For now, the focus remains on supporting the players and hoping for swift recoveries.
Bayern’s next confirmed match is against Bayer Leverkusen on March 16th. Updates on player availability will likely be provided closer to the match date. Fans can follow official Bayern Munich channels for the latest news and information.
