LEVERKUSEN, GERMANY – A dramatic Bundesliga clash at the BayArena saw Bayern Munich cling on for a 1-1 draw against league leaders Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, but the point came at a cost. Both Nicolas Jackson and Luis Diaz were sent off, leaving Bayern to navigate a significant portion of the match with nine men.
The result cuts Bayern’s lead at the summit to nine points, following Borussia Dortmund’s win over Augsburg, but underscores their remarkable resilience this season. Remarkably, Bayern has now salvaged 19 points from losing positions in the Bundesliga – more than any other team in the league.
Leverkusen drew first blood in the 9th minute. Montrell Culbreath dispossessed Diaz, initiating a swift counter-attack that culminated in Aleix Garcia’s powerful strike beating Sven Ulreich, albeit with a deflection off Jonathan Tah. The early goal set the tone for a tense encounter, one that would quickly escalate in drama.
Bayern, despite being shorthanded for much of the match, dominated possession. A goal by Tah was ruled out for handball following a VAR review midway through the first half, a frustrating setback for the visitors. Although, their hopes of a comeback were dealt a further blow when Jackson received a straight red card before halftime for a high tackle on Martin Terrier. It was a rare start for Jackson, filling in for the injured Harry Kane.
The second half continued to be a physical battle. Malik Tillman and Patrik Schick both squandered clear one-on-one opportunities to extend Leverkusen’s lead. Bayern’s fortunes didn’t immediately improve after Kane entered the fray in the 63rd minute, as a goal from the England captain was quickly disallowed for a handball in the build-up.
Diaz leveled the score in the 76th minute, expertly slotting Michael Olise’s pass past Janis Blaswich. However, any hopes of a Bayern victory were dashed just ten minutes later when Diaz was shown a second yellow card for simulation, reducing Bayern to nine players.
The BayArena erupted in the 90th minute when Jonas Hofmann’s deflected shot found the back of the net, but the celebrations were short-lived. A VAR review revealed Hofmann to be marginally offside, denying Leverkusen a late winner. Ibrahim Maza nearly snatched a victory for the hosts in stoppage time, but Ulreich was equal to his effort, gathering the shot before Maza could tap in the rebound.
Ulreich’s performance was crucial for Bayern, making five saves – his most in a Bundesliga match since 2024 – and preventing Leverkusen from capitalizing on their numerical advantage. The hosts’ expected goals (xG) surged to 2.59 following Diaz’s dismissal, highlighting their missed opportunities.
This match was a testament to Bayern’s fighting spirit, but as well a reminder of the fine margins in the Bundesliga title race. While they managed to secure a point against a formidable opponent, the red cards to Jackson and Diaz will undoubtedly be a concern for manager Thomas Tuchel.
