SCHAIJK, Netherlands – Badmintonvereniging De Klapper, a local club in Schaijk, is launching a new initiative aimed at introducing the sport to its youngest potential players. Starting in late March, the club will offer special training sessions, dubbed ‘badminiton,’ designed for children aged 4 to 8. The program focuses on a playful introduction to badminton and general physical activity.
The club will host three introductory training sessions on March 28th, April 4th, and April 11th, each running from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM local time (UTC+2). These sessions will emphasize fun, teamwork, and the development of hand-eye coordination. For parents unfamiliar with the area, Schaijk is located in the province of North Brabant, in the southern Netherlands.
According to youth coordinator and trainer Aniek Huijsman, the primary goal is to spark a love for sports in young children. “We hope for a fun group and, above all, a lot of sporting and playing fun,” Huijsman stated. The club intends to gauge interest in badminton within this age group to determine whether to offer structured, ongoing training programs in the future.
The ‘badminiton’ lessons will incorporate fundamental skills like throwing, catching, and striking, all while prioritizing enjoyment and building confidence. Badminton, while demanding agility and precision at higher levels, can be easily adapted for beginners, focusing on basic motor skills and spatial awareness. Huijsman added, “Hopefully, we’ll see the little enthusiasts in the hall soon.”
Badmintonvereniging De Klapper currently fields seven senior teams and three youth teams in regional competitions organized by the Bossche Badminton Federatie (BBF). The club’s home venue is Sporthal de Eeght, located on Bossestraat in Schaijk. The club boasts approximately 85 senior members and 25 youth members, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for players of all levels.
This initiative comes as the club looks to expand its youth program and cultivate the next generation of badminton players. The BBF, the regional governing body, oversees badminton competitions in the area, providing a structured pathway for players to develop their skills and compete against other clubs.
