BULLY-LES-MINES, FRANCE – A community-driven badminton initiative is set to take place this Saturday, March 14th, in Bully-les-Mines, France, aiming to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. The event, spearheaded by local students and the Bully-les-Mines badminton club, is a tribute to Augustine, a young girl who tragically lost her battle with cancer at the age of four.
The initiative was born from a school project undertaken by Méline, a third-year student at the Collège de Bouvigny-Boyeffles. Tasked with a project linking science and health, Méline, along with classmate Noémie, conceived the idea of combining sport with fundraising for a cause close to their hearts. “They came to me to talk about it,” explained Ludovic Baissac, president of the badminton club, “They imagined a day of badminton initiation.”
Baissac, a close friend and former colleague of Augustine’s family, is deeply involved with the association Wonder Augustine, which was established in the wake of her passing to support research into pediatric cancers. He regularly shares information about the association with club members, and it was through these conversations that Méline learned about the organization’s work.
The event will be held at the Salle Marcel-Becq, with three two-hour sessions scheduled for 10:00 AM, 2:00 PM, and 4:00 PM. Participants of all ages, from five years classic and up, are welcome to participate. The local municipality has supported the initiative, and the archery club has generously offered the use of their time slot to accommodate the event. “This cause resonates with many people,” Baissac stated, “yet pediatric cancer remains an underfunded area of research, making fundraising efforts all the more crucial.”
The sale of merchandise supporting the association has already begun within the badminton club, showing promising early results. Parents associated with Wonder Augustine have volunteered to bake goods for the event, with all proceeds directly benefiting the organization. Méline and Noémie will address participants during each session, sharing Augustine’s story, explaining the realities of pediatric cancer, and detailing how the funds raised will be utilized.
Pediatric cancer, while relatively rare, represents a significant challenge in medical research. According to the French National Cancer Institute (Institut National du Cancer), it remains a leading cause of death by disease in children. The Wonder Augustine association plays a vital role in supporting research efforts aimed at improving treatment outcomes and ultimately finding a cure.
The initiative highlights the power of community engagement and the dedication of young people to making a difference. By combining a healthy activity like badminton with a meaningful cause, Méline and Noémie have created an event that promises to be both enjoyable and impactful. The minimum donation for participation is 5€, and every contribution will head directly to Wonder Augustine.
For those unable to attend the event, donations to Wonder Augustine can be made directly through their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/AssociationWonderAugustine/. The association’s work is a testament to the enduring legacy of Augustine and the unwavering commitment of her community to fighting pediatric cancer.
The badminton initiative serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of continued research and support for families affected by this devastating disease. It’s a day of sport, solidarity, and hope, all in the name of a young life lost too soon.
