BADMINTON, England – Eighteen-year-old Maddie McGregor, from Scotland, is preparing to compete at the prestigious LeMieux Grassroots Championships at Badminton, alongside her pony, Kilshrewley Lady, affectionately known as Kitty. “I’ve had Kitty for eight years now, and she has taught me everything I know about the sport,” McGregor explained. “She’s got such a personality – very opinionated and quirky – but we love her for it. She’s very much in charge of the yard and her people!” This strong personality, combined with a deep level of trust, has allowed McGregor and Kitty to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
What sets this partnership apart is Kitty’s unique approach to jumping. The pony will compete in the jumping phases completely bitless, utilizing a Sidepull bridle. “Essentially it’s a cavesson noseband with ring attachments for the reins,” McGregor clarified. “We’ve found this is what she’s happiest with.” This demonstrates a commitment to Kitty’s wellbeing and a willingness to adapt training methods to suit her individual needs.
Training on the Scottish Coast
Based in Scotland, McGregor and Kitty face unique training challenges. Access to extensive equestrian facilities isn’t readily available, but the pair have ingeniously adapted, making the most of their surroundings. “We do most of our training on the beach,” McGregor said. “It’s not ideal, but it does make for some very scenic videos!” This unconventional training ground highlights their resourcefulness and dedication.
Overcoming Adversity
Their journey hasn’t been without its setbacks. Last February, McGregor suffered a broken vertebra in a fall from a different horse. The injury understandably impacted her confidence. “I only felt safe on Kitty for a while after that,” she recalled. “That’s how I came to event her last year. It’s been a process, but she gave me the confidence to get back in the saddle and keep going.” Kitty’s steady presence and unwavering support were instrumental in McGregor’s recovery and return to competition.
Strength and Wellbeing: A Balanced Approach
Recognizing the importance of physical conditioning, McGregor has prioritized her own fitness to better partner with Kitty. At nearly 6ft tall, she’s keenly aware of the require to maintain strength and balance while riding her 15hh pony. “I’ve taken up running this year so I can be fit enough for her,” she stated. “Being strong helps make it as easy as possible for Kitty – she’s little, but she’s got such a sizeable heart!” This dedication to her own wellbeing underscores her commitment to a harmonious partnership.
Qualifying for Badminton
Last year, McGregor and Kitty competed in four events, building towards their qualification for the Grassroots Championships. They achieved this goal with a second-place finish at the regional championships in Forgandenny. “We just missed out on first because of speeding penalties, but it was a huge achievement for us,” McGregor reflected. This near-miss served as motivation for further improvement and preparation.
Preparing for the Championships
This year, their preparation has focused heavily on dressage, with a recent shift towards ramping up jumping work in anticipation of their first event of the season at Kirriemuir. “I’m really excited for the championships this year,” McGregor said. “This is an opportunity to show everyone how amazing Kitty is and how deserving she is of her place there.” The pair are determined to showcase their skills and celebrate their remarkable journey on the Badminton stage.
