Avranches: Baie By Night Badminton Tournament Returns for 6th Year

Avranches, France – The Union Badminton Club de la Baie (UBCB) is preparing to host its sixth annual Baie By Night badminton tournament this Friday, March 6, 2026, at the Gymnase Michèle-Vallaeys. The event promises a full evening of competitive doubles play, drawing approximately 100 players from across the Manche department and surrounding areas.

The Baie By Night tournament follows the “Plumes de la Baie” event and represents a key date on the UBCB’s annual calendar. According to Amélie Rak, secretary of the UBCB, the tournament is a popular draw for licensed badminton players looking for competitive play after work hours. “It’s not our biggest competition, but it’s a exceptionally classic tournament open to licensed players. It’s held in the evening so people can play after work,” Rak explained.

Founded in 2013, the Union Badminton Club de la Baie has grown to develop into one of the most significant badminton clubs in Normandy. The club currently boasts 340 members, including both recreational and competitive players, and operates across four locations: Isigny-le-Buat, Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët, Avranches, and Sartilly. The UBCB also fields eight teams competing at various levels – departmental, regional, and pre-national.

This year’s Baie By Night will feature both men’s and women’s doubles competitions. Players from roughly twenty clubs, primarily from the Centre and South Manche regions, are expected to participate, with 28 players representing the UBCB itself. The tournament is structured to emphasize both synchronization and concentration, as players will compete throughout the evening, with the final matches scheduled to conclude around 1:00 AM.

The UBCB’s commitment extends beyond competitive play. The club operates a four-star badminton school focused on developing young talent, and offers a variety of programs for all ages and skill levels. These include free practice sessions, coached training, internal challenges for adults and youth, and mini-badminton sessions for children aged 7-9. The club also hosts several tournaments throughout the year, including the national-level “Les Plumes de la Baie” in Sartilly, and the unique “Blackminton” tournament, played entirely in the dark.

The success of the UBCB is built on a strong foundation of volunteer support, encompassing players, parents, and friends who share a passion for the sport. The club emphasizes a convivial atmosphere, recognizing that for the majority of its members – 70% – badminton is primarily a recreational pursuit.

The Baie By Night tournament is a testament to the growing popularity of badminton in the region. The event provides a platform for players to showcase their skills and enjoy a competitive evening of sport. With a limit of 100 participants, the tournament consistently attracts a strong field, demonstrating the UBCB’s ability to foster a thriving badminton community.

Following the Baie By Night tournament, the UBCB will continue its season with further competitions and training sessions. Players interested in learning more about the club and its activities can visit the Union Badminton Club de la Baie website or find them on Facebook.

The next confirmed action for the UBCB is the continuation of their regular training schedule and preparation for upcoming league matches. Fans can stay updated on the club’s progress through their official website and social media channels.
