Atmane Shines in Miami Although Pursuing Quantum Physics Obsession
The French player details his biggest interest off the court.

MIAMI, FL – While battling through the rounds of the Miami Open presented by Itau, French tennis player Terence Atmane is also tackling a different kind of challenge: unraveling the mysteries of quantum physics. The 24-year-aged, currently ranked No. 52 in the world according to the ATP Tour, has captivated fans not only with his on-court performance but also with his intellectual curiosity.
Atmane’s fascination with the subject began unexpectedly last year during a visit to his parents’ home in northern France. Battling jet lag, he stumbled upon a documentary featuring Morgan Freeman on Netflix about physics. “I was watching this documentary on TV, trying to fall asleep,” Atmane told ATPTour.com. “it didn’t help me sleep because after watching it, for the entire week, I watched everything I could about quantum physics.”
The left-handed player, who reached the fourth round in Miami, balances the demands of professional tennis with a self-directed study of complex scientific concepts. Beyond his well-known Pokémon collection, Atmane has set his sights on improving his cooking skills, but for now, quantum physics takes precedence. “I started to be really interested because I never really paid attention before to the world we’re living in,” Atmane explained. “So that’s pretty much how I started to be really interested in some simple questions like, ‘What is life about, and what is everything about? Are there any purposes? Is there anything I should grasp before I die?’”
According to Atmane, the deeper he delves into quantum physics, the more he realizes how much he *doesn’t* know. He’s been reading books and biographies of physicists, finding the process increasingly fascinating. “I started to read a lot of books about it. I also started to read a lot of biographies about physicists. The more I get to know all this kind of stuff, the more it starts to be really interesting,” he said. “For example, I like to know what Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein did, why they did it, how they discovered things, and what they did to discover everything.”
This intellectual pursuit isn’t confined to quiet study. Atmane has playfully incorporated his interest into his on-court celebrations. Last August, during a stunning run to the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open – where he upset top-10 players Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune – he wrote “¿La paradoja de Fermi?” (Fermi Paradox) on the camera lens after defeating Rune. “I started to be really interested in paradoxes and physics questions, and that’s how the Fermi paradox came up last year in Cincinnati when I was trying to learn about it a couple of days before the tournament,” Atmane said. He even attempted a similar gesture at a tournament in Acapulco, though it wasn’t captured on camera.
The Fermi Paradox, a concept explored by Albert Einstein, questions the contradiction between the high probability of extraterrestrial civilizations existing and the lack of contact with them. Atmane finds the exploration of such ideas compelling. “It was something that Albert Einstein discovered back then. He discovered that in our universe, time is equal to space, and I think it was really fascinating to learn this kind of information, which at first doesn’t seem remarkably interesting, but when you delve into it, it turns out to be really fascinating.”

Atmane’s journey into physics began with a documentary about the solar system, gravitational forces, and the Earth’s orbit. “I thought about how interesting It’s to spot that the solar system isn’t what we think. It’s not just random planets rotating around each other. It’s all a movement. It’s a trajectory,” he explained. “The Earth moves very fast through space, so it was very interesting to discover that because I didn’t know it. I thought everything was more or less in the same place, but it’s not true at all, and that’s where my real interest began.”
Currently ranked No. 53, Atmane carries a small physics textbook and a notebook with him on tour, diligently taking notes and sketching diagrams to deepen his understanding. He acknowledges the challenge of self-study, stating, “Unfortunately, I don’t have time to seize a formal course, so I have to learn on my own.” He also expressed a desire to improve his culinary skills alongside his physics studies, viewing both as significant goals for the year.
Atmane’s recent performance at the Miami Open, including a victory over No. 8 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third round on March 24, demonstrates his ability to balance his intellectual pursuits with the demands of professional tennis.
