NINGBO, CHINA – Wan Arif Junaidi and Yap Roy King are laser-focused on delivering a strong performance at the upcoming Badminton Asia Championships (BAC), dismissing distractions surrounding potential selection for the Malaysian Thomas Cup squad. The BAC, scheduled to take place in Ningbo, China from April 8-13, represents a crucial opportunity for the pair to showcase their abilities on the international stage.
Currently ranked 16th in the world, Arif and Roy King are vying for a spot in the coveted third men’s doubles position for the Malaysian team. Competition is fierce, with Goh Sze Fei / Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, currently ranked 6th globally, also in contention. Yet, the Malaysian duo is determined to avoid getting caught up in the selection process, believing that such focus could negatively impact their performance.
“It’s not something we want to feel about too deeply,” Arif Junaidi explained after a training session at the Akademi Bulu Tangkis Malaysia on Tuesday. “If we overthink it, it could affect our performance. So, we’re just concentrating on our own goals for the BAC.”
The Asian Championships arrive at a pivotal time for the pair. Even as the Thomas Cup looms large, Arif and Roy King are prioritizing immediate goals. This approach reflects a strategic decision to maintain peak performance and avoid the pressure of external expectations. For badminton fans unfamiliar with the significance, the Thomas Cup is a biennial international men’s team badminton championship – essentially the World Cup of men’s badminton – and representing Malaysia on that stage is a career highlight for any player.
Following a break for the Hari Raya holidays, both players have resumed intensive training. Arif noted feeling refreshed after spending time with family, and emphasized the importance of staying injury-free in the lead-up to the tournament. “I just got back from the Hari Raya holidays, so I feel fresh after spending time with family. Now the focus is on preparing as best as possible and avoiding injury,” he said.
Despite the high stakes, Arif and Roy King have set ambitious targets for the BAC. They are aiming for a podium finish, but realistically, a quarterfinal appearance would also be considered a success. This pragmatic approach demonstrates a balance between aspiration and a grounded understanding of the competitive landscape.
“Our target is to reach the podium. If that’s not possible, at least the quarterfinals,” Arif added. This ambition underscores their commitment to making a significant impact at the tournament and solidifying their position as a leading Malaysian doubles pair.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is also looking to field younger players in upcoming tournaments, including the Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) 2026, signaling a broader strategy of developing emerging talent within the national program. This move could further intensify the competition for places within the national team, but Arif and Roy King remain steadfast in their focus on the task at hand.
The upcoming weeks will be critical for Arif and Roy King as they fine-tune their preparations for the BAC. Their ability to maintain focus, avoid distractions, and deliver consistent performances will be key to achieving their goals and potentially securing a coveted spot on the Malaysian Thomas Cup team. The badminton world will be watching closely to see if this dynamic duo can rise to the occasion in Ningbo.
