Andrejs Rastorgujevs Finishes 8th in World Cup Biathlon – Kontiolahti Results & Highlights

Rastorgujevs Secures Top-10 Finish at Biathlon World Cup in Finland

Kontiolahti, Finland – Latvian biathlete Andrejs Rastorgujevs delivered a strong performance on Sunday, finishing eighth in the men’s 15-kilometer mass start at the seventh World Cup stage in Kontiolahti, Finland. The result marks a season-best for Rastorgujevs, showcasing his growing consistency on the international circuit.

Norwegian Sturla Holm Lægreid claimed victory with a flawless shooting performance, crossing the finish line in 34 minutes and 39.7 seconds. France’s Éric Perrot secured second place, 16.5 seconds behind Lægreid, although another Norwegian, Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen, rounded out the podium, finishing 24.1 seconds off the pace. Both Perrot and Christiansen incurred one penalty loop each.

Rastorgujevs, competing in his first mass start of the season, navigated the course skillfully and demonstrated impressive marksmanship, earning him a coveted spot in the top ten. He was penalized with one penalty loop during the second prone shooting stage, ultimately finishing 41.9 seconds behind the leader.

The Latvian biathlete began the race strongly, hitting all five targets in the first prone shooting and moving into 18th position. He continued his accurate shooting in the second prone stage, clearing all targets and climbing to eighth place. Rastorgujevs maintained his momentum in the first standing stage, also shooting cleanly and advancing to fourth, just nine seconds behind the leading trio.

However, a single miss in the final standing stage resulted in a penalty loop, causing him to drop to seventh. Despite the setback, Rastorgujevs battled through the final lap, ultimately finishing eighth. This performance is particularly noteworthy as it represents Rastorgujevs’ best result in a World Cup mass start event.

Two other Latvian biathletes also competed in Kontiolahti. Renārs Birkentāls finished 51st, with four shooting errors, while Edgars Mise placed 87th among 97 competitors, struggling with six misses.

This result for Rastorgujevs is a significant boost as the Biathlon World Cup season progresses. The World Cup circuit features nine stages this season, with upcoming competitions scheduled in Otepää, Estonia, and Holmenkollen, Norway.

Rastorgujevs’ eighth-place finish is expected to secure him a starting spot in the upcoming pursuit race, offering another opportunity to compete against the world’s best biathletes. The Latvian team will be looking to build on this success as they continue their journey through the World Cup season.

In the overall World Cup standings, Éric Perrot maintains the lead with 999 points, followed by Italy’s Tomaso Giacomel with 797 points. Rastorgujevs has climbed to 34th place with 128 points, while Birkentāls sits in 39th position with 109 points.

The Kontiolahti stage has proven to be a challenging but rewarding experience for the Latvian biathlon team, and fans will be eager to see how they perform in the upcoming events in Otepää and Holmenkollen.

What’s Next: The Biathlon World Cup moves to Otepää, Estonia, for the next stage of competition. Dates and specific event schedules will be announced on the official IBU Biathlon website.
